Totally forgot to do this. I retested my FTP this morning. I tested a month ago and got 216 which seemed off after a 5 minute test last week produced a 297 average. So, for Marc; guess my 20 min Abe watts. Price is right rules apply, no going over...

I am sticking with my 240, because of price is right rules. I bet it's a tad over.

You said you're "not a sprinter", so I want to go with 267, but you also said you don't know how to really suffer on the bike, and with this being your second 20' test, I'm going with 252.

Based on his bike performance from races he has talked about, I'll guess at 235

I think his outdoor 20' max is close to 260.  Indoor on the trainer, if not sufficient fans and still learning to suffer...237.

It looks like all the usual players are here, so I'll call it.

The winner is dmiller. My ave was 245.

The thing is, I think I whiffed it again, but I'm not going to bother with another retest. I started right at 240 and since it was so much higher than my first try I was nervous to overdo it and not be able to complete the test so I just watched my watch and stayed right on it. At minute 15 I started to realize that, although I was pushing hard, I was not near failure by any means. I started to increase effort through the rest of the test and was pretty beat after, but I would not call it pushing towards failure by any stretch. Oh well, it at least gives me a data point to start with. Walking away thinking, "that wasn't too bad" probably means I didn't do it right.

For some reason it wouldn't let me upload the graph of the test, so here you go in case you're interested:

Nice work.  Looking at the graph I wouldn't call it a whiff.  Maybe not perfect but most likely a pretty reasonable number to work with - certainly a lot better than the 216w you had before!

can't see the graph, link is asking me to sign in.

So your still a Sprinter!  CP is 227w with the 245 avg.  If you find workouts are a bit too "easy" bump the CP up as you go.  If you think you could of held 5 more watts the CP would be 234, 10 more 241.

I told my wife that according to the calcuation I was a sprinter, and she immediately snorted out a big laugh. Good thing she wasn't drinking anything at the time or it would have been your classic spit-take. So if that is any indication of my status of a "sprinter"....

Nice job.  Can you see now why some of us (from the marathon thread) were encouraging you to start putting your PM to use?  Opens up a whole new dimension to what it is like to suffer on the bike.

If you didn't feel wasted after the test, chances are you left at least 5 watts out there.  You don't need to retest to prove it...so I would just go ahead an calculate CP based on a 20' test of 250.  Start figuring out where your interval workouts will be based on your new CP and go from there.  Not every interval workout should feel like total death, but if you're getting through all of them consistently without any doubts that you will finish them half way through then it's probably time to up the CP again.  Rinse...repeat.

Agree with Jason.....if you didn't think that time stopped during the last minute or two then you probably left a little meat on the bone.  I hate testing and applaud those that do it with any regularity.  I have often joked that at the end of a well executed 20 minute test you should be leaking fluids out of at least two body orifices and you don't get to choose which two......or maybe that's just me.

Regardless, well done. Keep up the good work

Think I'll do this at the end of racing too.

Hey official, I don't think I gave it my all, I think I left about 2-3 minutes on the course, can you take that off for me?

I do this at work during my evaluation with my boss.  Tell him that at the end of most work days, I don't feel that stressed/exhausted, hence I can still train hard.  I could have worked harder, accomplished more tasks, and completed projects faster.  So I do deserve a bonus/raise.

Totally. With hitting the bike hard (using the power meter) over the last two weeks, I see that there is no way I could have been training for a marathon too.

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.

This Intermediate 20 week plan is a quick ramp up in overall volume, but with 20 weeks to train only, it is a gradual and safe approach because of the alternating weeks of the long run/bike.

I may not have pre-pubescent hips or breasts and at 36 that would be ridiculous. I do not need to have an "airbrushed body" and why do I revere that?
