I just got some green coffee beans from Kona today. I roasted them in a hot air popper to almost a dark roast; to about a minute after second crack. I can't wait to grind it tomorrow to see if it really is worth all the hoopla. Does anyone else roast their own beans and how do you do it? Any tips?

One thing that was a real downer was the smell. I anticipated getting this marvelous caramel chocolaty coffee smell during the roast. Instead it was more like damp grass? Hard to describe, but it certainly wasn't too pleasant. I'm just glad I did it outside because the wife woulda been fizzed to come home to that smell in the house!

I don't roast my own beans but a lot of people and coffee shops do here in Vietnam. Usually it smells pretty good. I think to get the nice aroma, you don't dry-roast but use some oil--people here use butter or coconut oil. Maybe this is also the time when the "flavoring" is added if you want vanilla or chocolate-lavored coffee, for example. Some people add chicory, cardamom pods, or cinnamon to the mix. Not sure just dry-roasting the beans will bring out much aroma.

Wow, it's good! I just ground yesterdays roast and brewed up. Stuff smells amazing during the grind. I'm kind of new to coffee, so while I think I did good, the real test will be if my wife likes it.

Hot runner, I'm guessing those shops are doing that roast in some sort of wok or shallow pan if they are adding oil? I think I'll take you up on your idea and maybe try to extract some flavor from a vanilla pod with a little coconut oil. Better do a google search...

Not sure....people who do it at home use a wok or pan. Have never done it myself or observed it, just smelled roasting in progress and read about it. There is one family-run guesthouse in Dalat (highland town in the coffee-growing region) that's very popular with lower-income expats (like teachers) since it's really good value, and they're right across the street from a cafe that roasts its own beans. You can smell the beans roasting every morning!
