In the past I used to compete in triathlon pretty good, even finishing Ironman Lake Placid on my 21st bday in 2012. I haven't competed since 2013 because mental illness took over and made life rough. I stuck through it all and now 3 years and 50lb later I'm getting back into shape and now I'm looking to get back into training. For the first time in years I feel motivated and spent the past few months weight training and only some swim bike and runs.

I'm looking to have a fun year but getting into shape is so hard! I can just barely swim 200 yds without stopping, mainly have been doing shorter intervals, I average about 800yds per session. I have been biking fine but slow outside and now on the trainer, I can do 45 minutes comfortably. Ironically my struggles are in running, it used to be my best sport and now I can barely run and walk 2 miles!

2016 will be a fantastic year though I'm so nervous because I lack any kind of real endurance and have never struggled like this to workout and train but heres to a happy and healthy new years@

Welcome back to it! And glad to hear you're coming out of a difficult period. I just want to offer support and encouragement!

Take it easy to build up. It's really hard to compare where you were with where you are today.  Try not to do that, but i know that's pretty impossible!

Muscle memory is an amazing thing and you'll be back to your fit self soon enough if you keep at it! (I was pleasantly surprised how quickly fitness came back after basically taking time off during pregnancy)

All the best in 2016

It's so tiring but has been very fun so far, this year will be a great year to get back into the swing of it all!

Glad you are back, this is my first time back on this site in 4 years! I am going to do my first 70.3 since 2012 due to injury. I too have gained too much weight. In 2015 I did all Olympic distance races but feel the need to get a few more 70.3's in.

Mental illness is tough, glad you are back!

The off-season is the best time to fine tune your skills and prepare yourself for the next season. It is also time for you to gain some strength and get a little rest after a long season of training.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
