Alan- thank you for the info. I think I'll order a HRM and look at it more! I have really low BP not sure if there's a relation between BP and HR but it would seem there should be.

I did my second week of Master's and really enjoyed it!

I have, and loved it. I only drank it on the bike but never got hungry. While I agree that most are just sugar water infinit has a little protein and more salt. You can also customize a formula for you.


That's kind of what I'm thinking - for the bike, particularly toward the end before the run when I won't want much solid in my stomach to start. 1/4 bananas on the run will be fine though - I have no interest in carrying anything while I run so I will make sure to practice with what they have on course.

It doesn't matter what the brand of the bike is or whether the shop deals in that particular brand. BBs are fairly universal, at least in the sense that there are no brand proprietary BBs. BBs are mostly determined by crank and almost all bikes will take a multitude of different BBs and cranks. You should really use the same crank length for both bikes though. Switching can really mess with your pedal stroke. 

As for PM on training or racing bike. In bike racing, a PM on a race bike isn't as important as it is to have it on the training bike (unless they're both the same like me, then it doesn't matter). But in triathlon, a PM is an invaluable tool for pacing, so it's very handy to have it on your TT bike. It might cost a little bit (new BB and crank for at least one bike) to get both the same but it would be well worth it. 

Otherwise, a good work around is the new Garmin vector single pedal power. It's half the cost of the two pedal version (duh) and works really well. It's actually easier to swap the vectors because, well, for one pedals are easier to swap in general, but with the Stages you have to get the torque right on the bolts when you put the arm on, this is not the case with vector. 




Great! I didn't realize Garmin made a one pedal PM! I've stayed away because of cost but one might bring it down close to a stages crank arm...maybe a bit more, but reasonable. I will look into it! If we are members of the Green Mountain Bike Club here we get great discounts at almost all the local sporting goods shops and LBS and other services as well. 15%-20% off. It's worth the $20 annual fee.

hour run today on the dreadmill...
my quads, gastrocnemius, and glutes are crying after yesterday's PT routine and today's run. 1 hour bike on deck tomorrow.

Today 90 min bike ride under mild rain, too much mud on the wheels when I got home... Still trying to find a comfortable position in my tri-bike, may be it just does not exist....

Tomorrow traveling with the kids for ski-week in Andorra, so no swim/bike/run but cardio and core and fun!

1:45 on the trainer. Legs are still SORE! I have an hour run slated for tomorrow. Looking forward to my rest day on Monday! I haven't even been able to do my one-legged squats since PT I'm so sore. Lots of rolling!

Yesterday, instead of jogging, I managed to run. Felt good. I pulled off 2 8:30 miles to start my four mile run. I've got a 6.2 mile long run scheduled for tomorrow. Baby steps.

Decided to bike this weekend and skip the long run. I'm gonna be away most of next week and will get in my running then. I did 40km yesterday and another 31km this morning, both on the trainer. Biking is starting to feel strong again.

Hopefully I'll get a morning at home sometime next week to squeeze a swim in.

Off to Boston this afternoon for a couple of days, then Ottawa and Washington, DC later in the week.

#57 - 20 min swim (2/12/16)

#58 - 5K race....PR'd by more than 2 min vs my last...time was 30:15....my first 5k ever was last fall and I've dropped almost 5 min off the time from that first one....not bad for a race in 10 degree weather....

#59 - 30 min trainer ride just to get the legs moving again and try out the new tire and put the bike through it's paces and check it out after getting serviced. Getting a smooth tire on it really makes a difference.

I wish that I had a wood or pellet stove here in the house....we have a fireplace...but it is one of the just look pretty and burn stuff in fireplace...unless you sit on top of it it doesn't really put off any heat....

We did a cobweb clearing mountain bike ride today (stayed home from skiing -no new snow + holiday weekend crowds + warm weather was a good opp to get stuff done around the house and get the bike out.

#66--awesome trainer ride this morning (after having to abort my run due to icy road conditions). Ride itself was a sufferfest, but my iPod shuffle algorithm was totally determined to transport me to my freshman year dorm room at U of IL. It was playing all the right songs to bring back a ton of great memories. I got off that bike with a huge smile on my face and an hour later I'm still wearing it. It is gonna be a good day (especially if I can get home before the sun sets to get that run in this afternoon)!!

#60 - 30 min drill workout swim....took today to figure out the float and kick board....and of course someone shares my lane that is like a drone swimmer...guess it give me something to inspire to.

#61 - 45 min trainer workout...thank goodness for the new back tire....


tomorrow starts the Hal Higdon 10K build up program. Need to work some more on the run and definitely on the swim. I did a self time trial end of last week and did 300m in just over 8 min. I've only been swimming (like actual swimming not playing in a pool swimming) since December. Almost ready to break down and get a coaching session to make sure that I'm doing it right.

Dave Q, Alan, Scott...who else has done full iron distance? What plan did you use or did you create your own? I'm following the "Be Iron Fit" intermediate/competitive plan (it's the same for the first 4 months or so), but am looking to compare it to others to make sure I'm getting what I need....will it be enough to get me there? Kind of thing. Did you like your plan? Would you use it again? Just looking for some insight. Thanks.

Freezing rain has closed schools here so the boys will be home...yet I have a dentist appointment at 9:00...and had planned a swim and run after. Quick change to a trainer ride maybe and hoping it warms up enough to run outside for 3 miles.. So I can still be home with the boys.

I used my own plan that I developed from Joe Friel's Going Long book. In retrospect I would have done things a little differently. I didn't do any threshold work just long easy riding. I did a few local bike races but that's it in terms of speed work. I couldn't do a lot of run training because of injury and by the time I figured out a method to train for the run without aggravating my injury it was almost too close to the event to make a difference. In my opinion all the endurance you'll ever need for an IM can (and should be) be developed on the bike. If I were to do another one, I would run 2km everyday (with the occasional longer days) and spend most of my time on the bike and in the water. I've looked at the Be Iron Fit training plan. I think Scott used it for his IM. It seems to be a decent one. It lacks in certain areas but for the most part I think it's a workable plan.

I used it for my HIM, and worked very well. Alan has a deeper understanding of the training itself, but I found it flexible enough to fit it in my busy life. Agree that most of running and biking is time/distance wise, not effort-based, but I did my HIM in 5:15, so all my doubts went away after crossing the finish line. I plan to use the Be Iron Fit plan for the day I go full crazy and sign up for a full IM.
