Expert 2852 Pfafftown, NC | Subject: Fueling/Re-Fueling for an OLY......sort of My current Sat. training day is +/- the OLY dist. equivalent. 2K-2.5K swim - 30 minutes to get to trainer ride and set up - 1:30-1:45 trainer ride (hard intervals) and then a 4-5 mi. (will be increasing as the year goes on) easy run. If I was running further than this, my rule of thumb (when I was training for the only HM I've ever run) was a gel about every 45-50 minutes. I have an iron stomach. I've never had negative results with any fueling products or foods. Last weekend, I had a banana an hour before, with 2 pieces of peanut butter toast. I ate a GU gel on the way to the pool.....and had a honey stinger waffle, before my trainer ride. Everything was OK....just don't know what's "optimal". There was 2.5 hrs (trainer ride + run) where I ingested nothing but water. Trying to nail everything down, as I have a late summer OLY and an early fall HIM planned. Best RE-Fueling options are foreign to me, also. Last week, I had a protein shake and then a turkey club. I'm 51 - just under 200#'s. |

That said, during the workouts, you just need enough fuel to complete the workouts as you have planned. Since the workout time is 'oly-like' with intensity probably 'oly-lite', you can probably take in something approximating what you would use in an actual oly (assuming you start with a reasonably 'full tank'--otherwise you may need a little more). After, eat a good, healthy meal. |

Expert 2852 Pfafftown, NC | Subject: RE: Fueling/Re-Fueling for an OLY......sort of Do you ask that because you think it's too much? I know it sounds like a lot, but it doesn't while I'm doing it. This past Saturday was my 1st. The swim is simply masters swim class. From there, it's a 10-15 min. rest and a 15-20 min drive/setup for the trainer ride (1.5-1.75 hrs.). The run is LSD....and for now, light on the distance. We're not (of course) bound to do all 3. The distance is OLY-ish. The intensity is NOT. |

A 4-5mi run after a more than one hr. interval bike session is pretty hard regardless of whether it is LSD or not--a longer one seems almost pointless to do on a regular basis. And this is all on top of a swim--which I assume includes some hard work. It doesn't sound like the best way to structure your training on a regular basis. Might make a good session now and then. But I don't know what you are dong the rest of the week, either. |
