Subject: cold weather running
I live in southern Ontario where it is not unusual for the temp to get into the minus 20 degree celcius area, especially overnight. With proper preparation and lots of layers, this never stops me from running, and if I dare say, I quite enjoy winter running, with one small exception. It seems that no matter how well I layer, my buns are always cold. From experience, I have figured out how many layers of what goes where to stay perfectly comfortable except for my butt. I am a slightly overweight 52 yr old male whose been tri-ing for 5 yrs or so, and continue to enjoy enjoy it immensely. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions to keep my caboose a bit more comfy?
Thanks for your thoughts
John

Hey John

I am in SW Ontario too. Normally its my extremities that freeze up first... toes and fingers. I have experienced the frost from behind that you mentioned and don't have the perfect solution. I simply add another layer. I've worn boxer briefs in addition to my base layer to shield my 6, also helps keep the copilot comfortable on those cold and windy runs.

Winter running, the struggle is real but it beats the treadmill.

I don't know if this would help, but when it gets well below zero, I'll wear my Pearl Izumi Amfib bib biking tights while running. They are thick and comfortable and the front has a windscreen. They are very warm.

Just more layers. I run all winter also and I'm in Northern Ontario. When it gets cold, I just pile on more layers.

I was just going to post something similar.

Live in MN, run well into the 0 degree Fahrenheit. I wear multiple layers and head gear and usually everything is toasty warm except my stomach in my case. It will get bright red and hurt. I am not overweight (just 47 years old and have a "dad bod").

I do wear synthetics (no cotton) when layering. If I wear too many more layers, I am dripping in sweat.

I wonder if this from sweating and the sweat evaporating/freezing? Same for you?

I live in WI, currently -7? -26 with wind chills, so I am used to cold weather running (not crazy enough to go out today) However, if your running pants have back pockets you could put a pair of hand warmers in them. Or buy a pair of adhesive foot warmers and stick them right to your maximus.

For me this is an always issue, not just a winter issue. I can be playing softball in the 100F+ heat during the summer time, come home to shower and both by stomach and my rear are downright chilly. I don't really feel it, but if I put my hands on either then they are quite cold to the touch. Very odd sensation, but like I said since I can't feel it when I'm running it hasn't caused me to think of using additional layers (over what I already do).

”Dang! That water’s cold!” immediately hit me. In these first few seconds, my triathlon goal sunk quicker than my legs and torso had. I now knew this was going to be a lot harder than I imagined.

Being lean isn't all wine and roses. The reduction in body fat has, unfortunately, also made me a slower swimmer. I have also become a real wimp in cold of any kind.
