I'm a returning to the sport triathlete. Never had this issue before...I sneeze all day/evening after a pool workout. I am in a different pool than before. Any help with chlorine issues would be appreciated. Are their different types of chlorine? I gues nose clip will help...any suggestions would be appreciated.

I get that way when I have been out of the pool for a long period of time. Once I get accustomed to going several times a week it goes away.

Having had some personal experience with this, I am pretty sure that it is not the chlorine that you are reacting to. It is actually just water going up into your nasal passages, and that can definitely create the symptoms you drscribe. Try using a nose plug for a few swims and see what happens with that.

Yep, worked for me too! And with headaches I would get after swimming.

Sensitivity to chlorine is very common and can come on suddenly, kind of like an allergy and might depend on the particular chems used. I never had a problem until about 2 years ago when I started with the sneezing a few hours after a pool swim. I tried various sprays, etc. but finally went to a nose clip for pool swims. No issues since, and I never have an issue swimming, playing or skiing in the ocean or a lake without a nose clip, so pretty sure it is the chlorine for me.

Good luck!

Thanks all! I think I'm being a bit lazy on a kick set, the last 50 on my back. I do believe the last 2 times I let water in my nose. I see nose clips in a vending machine for $3. I think I'll buy them for my kick set and the Flonase too! Thanks all again!

I have the same problem. It lessens over time for me. I wear nose plugs for some exercises.

I put vaseline up my nose as I still want to be able to breath normally. Works quite well (for me). I'll have a runny nose and be sneezing for a couple days after my swims if I don't.

over the last 2 years my nose has gotten quite sensitive to the chlorine in the pool at the Y. I would get pretty heavy nose bleeds the day after I swam. First I got a nose clip. Then I started putting vasiline in the nostrils before I swim (and still use the nose clip) and that almost complete stopped the nosebleeds. but I still sneezed a lot the next day. Now, in addition to the vasiline, and nose clip, I rinse out the nose several times immediately after swimming, with just plain water. Sounds gross and I suppose it is. In the shower, I cup my hands to catch some of the water, put my nose in it, suck up a bit of water and blow it back out. I do this several times - all my nose issues have gone away. - good luck

Great timing for this thread. As I sit here, my nose is running, my eyes are running, my sneezes are louder than the thunderstorms outside and I feel miserable. My reaction to the water has always improved as the season went along. This year, it's the exact opposite. My reaction seems to be increasing exponentially with each swim. I'll be trying all remedies to see what works.
