Subject: Got a cold. Whento train and when to rest?
I did a big workout, yesterday. Felt great. My wife's been sick (cold) and I felt my sinuses draining a little, after my workout, and decided to get on the Zicam. Throughout the day, yesterday, and through the night......I now have a cold. I'm still taking the Zicam (I have no idea if it helps or not) and I'm taking Mucinex.

I don't feel "terrible", and I could use a day or two off anyways (my logs are current). What's the general consensus on training when you're sick?

Thanks.

Sickness is a stress on the body. When you train you apply a stress to the body. So now if you are to workout, you have additional stress from being sick, not sleeping well, etc. Be knowledgeable about that, and if you are not feeling better as your session starts 5-15 minutes in it might be wise to stop.

That said, going for a walk will do wonders. It is low stress, aerobic in nature, and will get more oxygen to your muscles and keep you moving. If anything I would suggest a walk, you'll probably feel better after.

The last thing you want to do is sit around in a house not moving.

Generally I like to feel it out with a cold.

I usually don't plan to do anything super intense either way, but an easy or moderate workout, if it feels good I will still do.

If I start the workout and just feel like total garbage, I call it quits on what's scheduled and might just walk, or go home and curl up in a ball :p

FWIW, I have some minor cold symptoms right now, really doesn't get in the way of much, and got a PR on my Half Marathon yesterday :p

If it was much worse I might have tried jogging it in with my wife :p

I'm not really sure about training through sickness, but I checked your logs. Do you have recovery weeks? I didn't break it down, but you generally looked pretty consistent over the past two months with no real recovery time (I didn't look into intensity just hours).

"First, there needs to be some sort of recovery built into your training, assuming you are training at a workload that is stressful enough to produce fatigue. If you never feel tired then you don't need recovery weeks. If you do accumulate fatigue over several weeks of training then a periodic break from the norm will be good for you."

"Most serious athletes need a recovery week after about two to five weeks of hard training."

"The bottom line is that I'd suggest doing only short duration workouts at low intensity for two or three days"

Those are only snip-its from one point of view, but you get what I'm saying.

Yeah, if there haven't been any breaks, then being sick, I'd take the rest.

Training in the cold can be effective and fun with some planning. Overall, prepare for the environment, stay hydrated and dry, listen to your body and have a great safe cold weather outing.
