Subject: Tubular Tire Sealant
Hi all,

I have just bought some carbon wheels (second hand) and they have come with tubular tires. I have never used them before.

I went to try and top up the front tire and when the valve opened a white liquid squirts out, presumably some sort of sealant. Smells like latex.

I'm struggling to pump the tire up without the sealant squirting out.

Is there any method of cleaning the sealant out or is it a case of replacing the tire?

Many thanks,

Pump the tire "Down"

Place the wheel such that the valve is near the floor (at 6 o'clock) for several minutes, and during the entire procedure.
This should drain the liquid out of the valve before opening it.
Put on a pair of safety glasses to prevent any liquid from squirting in your eyes.
Attach the pump head to the valve
Inflate.
Remove pump head.

Sounds like someone added too much sealant... it shouldn't spray out when you pump the tire...

You can remove the stem and drain some out. Another trick is to spin the tire a few revolutions before pumping, that will distribute the sealant evenly throughout the tire and shouldn't spray out.
