Total Time = 45m 11s
Overall Rank = 8/177
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 1/9
Pre-race routine:

Race start line was just a short walk from my house, so I got to sleep in and have a normal race routine (using my own bathroom instead of porta-potties, etc). had some coffee, oatmeal, and a banana. got dressed and did a short warm-up run to and around the start (.25mi)
Event warmup:

see above
Run
  • 45m 11s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 31s  min/km
Comments:

Mind and Core were willing, my legs just didn't have another gear today. I wasn't watching my Garmin, but in my head I thought I was moving faster every mile. Disappointed to see the splits increasing with almost every mile. Still a good run, but was looking for a PR here.
What would you do differently?:

I've been doing some 3 mile speedwork, probably need to extend the distance.
Post race
Warm down:

kid #3 had a soccer game at 9am, so I didn't even wait around to see results. I walked over to the light rail station and headed home

What limited your ability to perform faster:

not enough longer speedwork

Event comments:

really good race - looked light a great post race fair - and really close to my house. course is flat and fast.

average HR was 161 with a max of 197(?). mostly L4, L5 - so I was working hard. a little disappointed in my splits - 7:02 (good!), 7:18 (okay, it was a slight incline, but the rest of the way is a slight decline), 7:11 (better), 7:18 (why aren't I going faster?), 7:25 (what?). 7:32 (seriously?).
Course: start at the Christown Spectrum Mall and head north and east for 1.75mi, then straight down central ave to the finish at the Phoenix Art Museum.

Great race, Tom!  I know the time wasn't what you were prepared to turn in but the effort was there.  Is it possible that the last couple of miles were slightly uphill?  The 8th overall and winning your AG indicate (and congratulations, by the way!) that your race was much better than the numbers on the clock.  Way to go!!

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had weight issues. I remember standing on the scale as a child weighing 60 pounds and feeling fat. My family dealt with stress by eating.
