You guys eat those? And how? Scale them and flash fry/saute?

My Grandfather taught me how to fish. Fishing was usually a 2-3 step process. One, he'd start calling all his buddies and asking what was biting and where. Once he had the species and location nailed down, we went to one of his or a friend's stock tanks, to catch bait. This involved seining, dip netting and even using cane poles to catch bait. One of my fondest memories was using cane poles to catch perch. Except we were throwing out the bigger perch like Lapdog has in his post and keeping the ones half that size. I asked why and his reply was that, "Perch are a no count trash fish that are only suitable as bait." So, I'm just a little kid who thinks we had half the trip in the bag and Grandma has a crapton of fish to fry for dinner. Nope, we just had half a bucket of bait is all! Then, we would go home and have lunch. he'd have coffee, listen to weather on the radio, take a nap and eventually we would go fishing later in the evening. A lot of sitting around waiting for a 7-8 year old kid. Around 3-4 PM we'd load up in his truck and head out to the body of water he'd selected to catch a 'mess of fish.' And we'd do just that by trot line or rod and reel. He preferred to use a trot line to avoid hanging out at the lake/river/pond all day. I think he only used a rod and reel to fish when I was visiting them because that was what I wanted to use. It was the only concession he allowed in his fishing process that I can recall.

He had it down to a science. For most of us, fishing is an activity that involves a lot of waiting around for fish to come to us. His mindset was that he was gathering meat for dinner and the freezer. Waiting around for the 'bite' was best done inside, on a lounger in front of the a/c unit. Sitting around a dusty stock pond or bobbing around on a john boat was for fools! The fish were most active in the evening before dark and that was the only time he would consider worth his time to go fish!

I was sitting by the lake yesterday watching my daughter and one of her friends haul in perch and release them as fast as they could bait a hook and get it back in the water. I had a blast watching them and baiting hooks for them. It never dawned on me to actually keep them and eat them because of my Gpop's influence. So, what does that recipe for perch look like???

mdg2003 - I fillet those "panfish" and fry them in peanut oil   They end up being like the greatest potato chip you ever ate.   It takes quite a few fish to make a meal, but they are delicious.  I know other folks who just remove the guts and head, scale them, bread the entire fish, and fry it that way.  Most of the little bones will fry up enough that you won't even notice them, but I'm just more comfortable filleted them.  When I was in high school, we'd take fly rods to the blue gill spawning beds in June and catch entire baskets full.  Back then there was no electric fillet knife and it would take us hours and hours to clean them all......but the eating always made it worth the time.

We use a commercial breading called "Andy's".......there is the regular and the "Andy's Red" which is spicier......get the Red.  You don't need to do anything to the fillets except throw them in that breading while they are wet.

I'm frying fish this afternoon......pictures coming.

Man: well, every night I take all my pet fish for a walk to the lake, I let them swim for about half hour and then I whistle and they all come back and jump in my basket and we go home. We do this every night.
Warden: Well that's just a crock of lies!!
Man: here I'll show you... (Releases the fish in the lake
Warden: well this I got to see!!
5 minutes later...
Warden: well??
Man: what?
Warden: the fish!! Where's your pet fish??
Man: what fish??

Lol, The funny thing Is that I can actually see this happening.  Or terrifying thing... I don't know.

When I was younger I used to do some salmon fishing on Lake Michigan.  I grew up on a town right on the water and we would go out occasionally.  Those were some big fish to catch!  I know I have some pictures somewhere, probably at my parents house stored away somewhere.  That is something I would like to do again.  I've heard that it has gotten better over the past few years again.

This thread is making me want to get out there again this summer.  I need to get some new fishing gear though.  I also need to learn how to filet a fish better.

I see you like Tony's seasoning. Do you guys have access to Zatarain's fish fry up there? Try the one flavored with lemon. It's lighter than most mixes and has a much finer ground cornmeal. I've had it on catfish, redfish and specks. It's also our favorite for shrimp. Looks like yo had a great dinner.

Bootygirl… you're just making me jealous with all those awesome spots you have access to in your area. What range is that and where were you guys camped?

Yes, we have Zatarain's up here..... I'm not sure about the breading....but I always have a few bottles around for shrimp/crawfish boils.  I'll look next time I'm at the store.

Spencer Hotsprings outside of Austin, NV.    That is the Toyabe Range we are looking at.   The great Smoky Valley is one of my favorite basins in Nevada.

I had to look it up. We've never been to the middle of Nevada before. We have spent a bit of time along the southern border, up towards Utah from LV; or going west up towards DV. Also driving south from Reno to Yosemite and Mammoth; a beautiful drive loaded with amazing little stops along the way! I'm always fascinated and feel drawn to the desert southwest. Probably something to do with the Comanche running through my DNA! As always, please post more pics if you have them.

Spent last weekend on the border of the Great Basin and Sierra Nevada.   Theses photos were taken from locations not too far from each other, looking opposite ways.

Beautiful area. We're hitting the High Sierras in July. We're going to drive up from Vegas to Mammoth and then up to the back country of Yosemite. Never made the drive from Vegas so that should be pretty scenic. I'm looking forward to all of it. Can you recommend any must see spots? We'll most likely run up 95 and cut over to California on 266. Or should we go on up to Tonopah and then cut over? Any input on which route is best?

We took 266 as an alternate route home from Death Valley earlier this year.    where it turns into 244 going north up Fish Creek Valley, it was really pretty.   I imagine you would turn left there to get to Mamoth Lakes - the other side of the White Mountains should be Nice, but I have never driven it.

Tonopah isn't a lot to look at.    For site seeing, I think 266 is better.   If you need to spend a night, go through Tonopah.   go to the Mizpah - restored historic hotel.   Don't stay at The Clown motel!

Thanks! since my last post, the travel dept. (mrsmdg) has informed me that we will be going through Death Valley to get there. I'll keep your advice in mind in case she decides we drive the other way instead!
