Did we change forum and no one mentioned it? It's awful quiet around here. Must all be busy writing race reports. No?

Today was interesting. Had several mishaps on the bike including going down one time (I'm ok, just road rash). But overall I'm very pleased with my effort in some tough conditions. 4:53:06, which is a 20 minute 70.3 PR for me. And this is by far the hardest one I've done. Feels good to see progress!!

That sucks! I'm sorry about what happened, but I guess it happens to everyone at some point. I did the complete opposite one time and ended up going nearly 10 miles in a 10k race. Surprisingly my time of about 1:25 was still good enough for third in my age group. (I almost forgot to mention that there were only three people in my age group

My Sprint went well today. This pretty much marks my one year anniversary of becoming a Triathlete.

I beat my time from last year by almost 8 minutes even though I had a few hiccups along the way.

Forgot to hit the start button on my Garmin and fiddled with the watch on my first lap in the pool to get it going as it had gone into power save mode already.

Then on the bike about 3 to 4 miles in I realized that my front brakes were rubbing on one side. Adjusted that while not trying to crash or slow down and probably picked up an extra 1 mile average after that.

On the other bright side I really improved on my transition times.

I did a three hour ruck march this morning. It was hot, and 45 pounds of ruck really pushed me mentally because my shoulders were killing me. The cool part is it got picked up by the local news.

I have never done a pool based tri, its unfortunate that the seeding never works well but i think that comes with the territory. Good job on the improvement.

My sprint was a 300yd pool swim/9mile bike/3 mile run race.

Pre race wasn't too bad, except for noticing that my powertap wasn't putting out anything.  The pm was detected, but didn't put out any numbers.  That's usually the sign of a dead battery, so there wasn't anything I could do about it that morning.  Other than that everything was smooth.

I had two guys who were faster than me even when I was in full tri mode, so I knew that I was fighting for 3rd at most.  I was still seeded to go first in the water, and earned that by getting the swim in around 4:00 (think I saw 4:02 on the clock when I got out).  I think I went a bit too hard though, but when I noticed no one was behind me in my lane I got all excited and kept pushing.

For the bike I averaged 20.6 mph.  I probably could have gone harder, but I didn't because w/o power I wouldn't know if I was surging too hard and I knew the run was going to be tough.

The run was really hot.  At that point I think it was 88, but feeling like 97 with humidity in the 80% range.  I averaged 7:57/mile for the run, which honestly wasn't too bad considering no one was under 7:00/mile in the race.  That even included the two faster guys with one of them being a Kona qualifier.

At the end my race time was 57:33, but missed 3rd overall by 3 seconds.  I was all by myself on the run, so I thought I had 3rd locked in place.  Gotta remember that in a TT start every second counts.  Got 1st in my AG at least.

Anyway, it was fun taking a splash back into the sport.

It was hard. I had to keep reminding myself that it was a short distance and I didn't have to run. But I under estimated how hard 35 lbs would be to carry, and when I got home DH weighed my pack and it was 45# not 35!!!!!! So it was probably closer to 50 when I started because of the water.

Quick review of Buffalo Springs. I actually LOVED this race. I thought the swim was really nice being down in the cavern, the bike had a few tough climbs but was a lot of fun, and the run course was great other than one brutal mountain that you had to walk up.

Sean and I found each other getting into the lake so we actually got to start the swim together. My swim went well and I ended up with a 31 minute swim and nice PR. The bike roads were rough as I mentioned and I lost my infinite 20 miles into the bike. The aid stations were chaos and I never got in the carries and electrolytes that I needed to set me up for a good run. Then I paid for it several on the run. It was a suffer fest.

All in all it was still a fun day and a PR at the 70.3 distance.

I also raced Buffalo Springs and it was great to meet both Sean and Omar from BT, even though they both kicked my you know what! I swam 31:29 which is a PR for me but the hills on the bike, combined with the heat I was not prepared for. By the time the run started my legs had decided they were done for the day which made for an epicly slow run. All in all I was only 5 minutes over my goal time of 5:30 so not a terrible day but not one for the personal highlight reel.

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
