For the last 6 weeks I have been diligently following my 50km plan which is normally 5 runs including an increasing weekly LSD run. I have only missed a single 8km run) I also bike everyday. I am up to 25km on my last long run and the longest run will be 40km 3 week before the race . (its a 16 week plan) All of my long runs have been on easy trails so far. The race I am looking at is a 50km trail run with 4 loops of 12.5km. The course isnt totally flat but it certainly isnt up mountains either. This is the race I am looking at; http://www.runforthetoad.com/home.htmlWha Da Ya Think?

Can you fill me in a little bit on your running history? Any reason why you want to jump right into a 50K vs running some shorter trail stuff?

I can absolutely understand the desire to run the trails and not the road!

While running on the trails is a lot more...forgiving on the body in my opinion, there is a certain amount of mental (and physical of course) strength needed for being on your feet for 6,7, 8 hours. Depending on the course, running 50K can take a heck of a lot longer than running 26.2 miles on the road. In fact, a heck of a lot longer than running 50K on the road.

I did the 5 peaks trail run series a couple of years ago which was mainly 12 - 13km runs, some of which were fairly rough. This year I have done a 10km trail run and my Xterra race also had a 10km run. Last year I did the Xterra Ontario series. In training for the past 6 weeks I have done a 15,18,20,15,22, and 25km run all on trails. I have also done 1/2 marathons in the past and did do marathon training but went on a kayak trip instead of running the race. Current training load, including biking is about 10 - 12hr/week for the past 6 months.

I think you could complete a 50K but it does seem that you are missing out of a truly long run on the trails that better simulates what an ultra really feels like.

I've run a variety of "ultra" distances out there on the trails including 100+ miles over 3 days which ended up being something like 30 miles one day, 46 miles the next and then 30 the day after that. There is something that happens out there past about 4 hours of running that takes a good amount of mental strength and physical endurance to get through.

*I did look at the event finally and while it doesn't provide an elevation map it appears to me to be one of those "faster" and flatter courses. If this is true, you are probably fine

Dave, I did the 25k Toad in 2012. It was an unusually warm day for the time of year but it was fun. As someone who has done a lot of road running it wasn't comparable to a road race and my time was much slower than a half marathon. (Now for me, I was only a bit over a month out from finishing an ironman and unbeknownst to me at the time i was a few weeks pregnant as well).

While the Toad is not super technical the terrain changes quite a bit over the loop - some road, some trail, some field grassy trail, some is really rooty.  The race is nicely populated but i think the spread once it is just the 50k folks makes it pretty quiet. I would say a 40k run is pretty long for a long run in training but perhaps you do it with planned walk intervals. (The one super steep hill in the Toad i only saw one person run up it - and it would be virtually impossible if it was wet) - at least given you've never run this distance and would be a safe way to build from there. There's not a ton of time - and from my own experience with marathon training it's once you get to those 30k long runs that injury can creep in pretty quickly if you push the pace too hard, in particular.

ETA: yes, you want to think about time on your feet, not necessarily a distance or pace as much.

Gotta use all that upper body strength you developed with the marathon training somehow!

I just watched the documentary The Barkley Marathons, it's available on iTunes for $0.99. Does anyone know anyone who's done one of these? Awesome movie and very motivating if you haven't seen it. Just figure I share with the group given all the ultra/marathon talk of late.

Hahaha I love the RD Gary Cantrell. I don't personally know anyone. It's a pretty select few that get the "opportunity"

He seems like such a character. Collecting clothes and licence plates as entry fees. Nuts! Opportunity is definitely one way to describe it. Apparently this documentary has really driven up the interest level but (for now) he's still keeping it to 30 or 40 participants. Gotta love the old school / not greedy mentality of this one.

I previously had no baseline to compare Jared Campbell to. No elite status trail runners had attempted it to my knowledge. When Gary Robbins failed and wrote his report I now know how truly badazz Jared is. http://garyrobbinsrun.com/blog/2016/4/barkley

Wow, nice find. Any idea what is on the disk? It would be tricky to find a computer that can even read one of those

Good report and good race! I know how frustrating it can be to screw up in transition, but I think you must have done a good job regaining your composure and having a good race.

Good news here. They sprung my Dad from the hospital last night and now he is at my wife's nursing home for cardiac rehab. He was the happiest guy around when I told him I was coming to pick him up and bring him back here and he would be with my Mom. For us we will get a little bit of respite and hopefully I can get my training back on track.

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
