Subject: Train for oly and a 1/2 at the same time?
I am thinking of training for an oly and a 1/2 simultaneously. I don't see a problem as the oly is only 6 miles, and on the "rest" days or "cross training" days while training for the 1/2 I can do my biking / swimming. I don't have a time limit, so 12-16 weeks would be fine with me. I think I am going to use Higden's 12 week plan.

Anyone do that type of cross training?

Well, I'd venture a guess that a LOT of people do an OLY as part of their HIM training.

I'm doing 2 (OLY's).....leading up to a HIM.

I'm going to assume this is an oly and a half marathon.  And, sure, you can train for both.  You probably can't train 'optimally' for both, but I doubt that is a major concern.  How you balance the training depends on your goals for each race.

x2

I would say that these two races are both hard efforts, so keep that in mind when you create your training plan.

This. Training for the oly should give you the fitness to finish the half especially if you add some mileage to your weekly runs. But. . . you'll always be faster when you focus solely on running.

lots of questions arise from your post.

When is the Oly ? I see the HM is in April (2017)... it would be important to know how close these 2 races are.

And yes the Oly is "just 6 miles" (run) but have you ever done a tri ? you will be training for the bike and swim too....which will suck up your training time for running. How's your swimming ?

I'd say you'll need to tailor your training plan to effectively combine both races, and not just blindly follow the Higdon plan for the HM.

For example, I just did an Oly this past Sunday and will be doing a 15miler trail run on May 7. I'd say it's been a challenge to get in the miles for that and the Oly training, but I've been doing it.

A Navy Seals program modified specifically for triathletes. Heavy on the running, swimming, push/pull-ups and sit-ups, will you find yourself man (or woman) enough to finish?
