I'm going to assume my race number will be on my race belt (which will be on me). I may let them mark my calf (although that's the part I know isn't mandatory), just to say I got marked.

In my last race they specifically wanted to see a body number, not just my bib. I'm sure the enforcement of this is all over the board but that was the first time they asked to see my number on me. Fortunately it was a hot day so I didn't have to strip down.

My last couple of races, they marked me.
I wear a sleeved suit and calf compression. So you really couldn't see anything they "marked" me with.
I'm doing IM Raleigh in June. I'll see what happens there.

Originally posted by nc452010 I'm just curious. I'll be wearing a sleeved suit in upcoming race and my tri shorts would cover the thigh markings (typical spot for the numbers), also. Is it a requirement that you be marked? Do they need it to identify my body?...lol I understand the age on the calf thing.....but, I'm wondering if even that is optional. Anyone here a RD or know the rule? Thanks.

I emailed USAT about this in 2014, and this is the response I got (re:Pearl Izumi Octane)

"Yes, that suit is legal.  Body marking can be done lower than the sleeves."

It's goofy, but I just have them mark my forearms to be on the safe side.

I have the issue where my marking come off. I am very fair and putting on sunscreen seems to make the marker not stick at all. It's there when they mark me but as soon as i put in my wetsuit it rubs off.  I am definitely not foregoing sunscreen in any race - my dad's had skin cancer.  Anyway, I've never gotten any warnings or any other kind of trouble for not having the body marking. Though, i am such a goody-goody that i get it done anyway. Besides, i always read other people's calf, it is fair that they see mine.

Will there be photographers at your race?  It's easier to identify you when they sort photos.  If it isn't, then your photos go in the lost and found.

Have you purchased race photos before? I've not seen a photographer's site yet that threw anything away.....lol. They might put them in an "unknown bib #" file. But, they're not keen on throwing away potential revenue.

They check bike #s against racer numbers (body marking or bracelets, depending on what the race uses) to be sure no one is stealing another racer's bike.  If you are that adamant about not being marked, email the RD about the rules of being marked, especially concerning bike removal from transition.

I said lost and found. Not trashcan.  Lost and found as in a separate folder where numbers aren't legible.

Wow, this thread is quite the reads, and all over not wanting to get body marked? it's simple,

If them is the rules, then get it done.

I don't see the point in not being able to listen to my ipod on the run, but its a rule. Some of the races I do, I'd like to go shirtless, but I can't cause it part of the rules on certain races. So to me it's an easy one to answer.

If it's a rule, then just follow it.

P.S. I have even brought my own sharpie and marked myself cause it said I had to be body marked.

Well, the rules say you have to be body marked. It doesn't say to what degree. So, I did finally ask (the RD).

I have to be marked...................................in some way. I'll comply with that. The sleeves on my tri top are white. The outer legs on my tri shorts are white. I have no interest (nor do I see the point) in staining them with permanent marker ink. They can mark the back of my hand, and I'll be in compliance.

Thinking out loud...........what would stop a thief from buying his/her own magic marker? I think that's why they want to see our race numbers

I didn't think it was a big deal, either. Someone (I assume, from this site) posted the same Q on "that other site". I didn't read anyone on that thread (I think it had about 100 replies) who is in favor of being marked. I really didn't think it would be controversial.

I complied with the rules, Saturday. I let them mark my left hand with my bib #.

No issues.

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.

I may not have pre-pubescent hips or breasts and at 36 that would be ridiculous. I do not need to have an "airbrushed body" and why do I revere that?

The human body can endure extreme physical hardships but a trained, confident mind can endure much more.
