Not sure what the context is, but I found this:

SS = Steady State (85% + 3 beats per minute of max HR)

That sounds like it could be similar, at least, to what your plan is looking for.  It would be something 'comfortably hard' that requires some focus but is not physically difficult to maintain for 8min.

It stands for Sweet Spot I bet. It's high zone 3 low zone 4 by Coggan / Hunter zones. Google frank overtons's sweet spot article

In most cases, it means steady state, like JK said, but given the context (intervals) I'd go with sweet spot (90%-95% of FTP), like Suzanne said.

a little detective work with special agent google, suggests that in your context it actually IS steady state

"SS means "steady state", which is 45-73% of your road test power"

This link contains that exact workout along with a glossary (scrool down a bit)
http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/85/health-fitness/rustybrooks-aba...

also a recent article from active this year uses the same workout.

What plan are you following?

I'm doing the 22 week sprint tri program and the 2 mile bike ride it starts with is not very challenging. I see this as a opportunity to train the right way and challenge myself. Any ideas?
