Agreed that the cost of running a tri vs a 5k is a big factor.

I don't think just because there's some scams out there means to put off charity all together...but an interesting point to remember.

I also agree with what was said that I prefer not to ask my friends and family to donate on my behalf just to hit a fundraising goal that would fund me doing an athletic activity. If later in life (only 26) I develop a connection or personal familiarity with a particular cause, I suppose that might change.

I've done a handful of charity 5k races the past few years, I think they are better charity events anyways because you can attract a wider and larger group of people to participate and thus raise more money. Triathlon is more of a niche sport.

The reason that I wanted to complete a triathlon is because I was watching one on TV and said to myself, "I'll bet I can do one of those".
