I think most of you have heard of Lew Hollander, but if you've ever said "I'm getting too old to stay fit", check him out. At 84, had 23 straight Kona 140.6 finishes under his belt, before DNF'ing in 2015. Even then, he made it through the swim and bike, but didn't think he could make the run cutoff.

I find him more inspiring each time I bump up to the next age group...

Lew is a local boy (fellow Oregonian). I think a big part of it is the active outdoor lifestyle. The older native Oregonians especially seem to pride themselves on their stoicism and physical toughness. For a while before I got into triathlon, I did a lot of hikes with a local club, and we had lots of people in their seventies and eighties, and even a few in their nineties who were regular participants. There was a memorial service for one lady who was 96--she'd done her last hike just six months or so before she passed away. There are quite a few people well into their 70's in our local bike club. One guy has had two hip replacements and is a regular on 3-5 hour rides. Until about two years ago, I had trouble keeping up with him. There are some very tough, fit old people in that state, though not all of them do Ironman.

Thanks for posting this! Your timing was great I've been getting a bit down because I was psyched up about the coming season and then I broke a rib nearly 3 weeks ago and it is keeping me from doing any training. At almost 62, I'm not quite as quick to heal as I once was. But, if Lew can do what he's doing with 23 more years under his belt, well that is motivating. I can walk and maybe hike, and reading about Lew just got me fired up enough to start evaluating what I can do right now instead of what I can't.
