Regular 156 | Subject: Can you swim forever? I read some of the swim workouts thread with a mixture of awe, envy and disbelief. For the record my longest swim to date was during my only iron distance race and assisted both by a sleeveless wetsuit (mandatory) and a generous current. I am a MOP swimmer. Having said that once I settle in to my stroke I feel like I could go for days. I live in coastal Virginia and cross and/or pass bodies of water daily. I always tell myself that I could swim across these expanses if I wanted to (assuming I could dodge marine traffic which is unlikely since some of these are major shipping channels). This delusion is further fueled when the water is calm and glassy. Something about seeing a finite landmark (shore, buildings, etc.) that makes it seem all the more doable. It's certainly too risky to attempt and probably illegal so since I can't really test my theory, I'll have to continue believing I can! |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Can you swim forever? Read Dyana Nyad's book about the Cuba to Florida swim. I found that really amazing, not just that she actually did it, but that it was one of many, many attempts over several decades. Plus I believe she was in her sixties when she finally made it. As for me personally, I do think I could "swim all day" if the water was calm and I had some compelling reason to do so. I would definitely need some nutrition and water along the way, but there are ways to do that. Not super-fast (or big enough to stay warm in cold water like those pro marathon swimmers) but I do have an "all-day" pace that's about 1:50/100m and it's not that hard to keep going and going. I have done 10K swims several times as part of a charity fundraiser for our youth team; would have been fine doing another 10K as long as I kept the pace under control. |

74 | Subject: RE: Can you swim forever? I'll mix it up here and say no, I can't swim forever! Started tri 6 years ago, had never swam a lap in a pool in my whole life. 100% self taught, couldn't even swim 100 freestyle without almost drowning when I started! now I swim 1:50 per 100 for HIM swim, 1:40ish for sprints. My longest swim workout ever is 2800 total and I rarely do 2000+. I did a 1500 workout yesterday and I was pooped afterwards. But that being said, the last 3 years I've done a half and oly each year and a handful if sprints. I do get bored in the pool so I think that feeds into most of my workouts being 1500 or under. I am eyeing maybe doing a 1 mile open water swim this summer because I do love swimming in open water but I just dont have opportunities to do it besides in races. Anyways, I'm going to continue to try to build strength so maybe someday I can swim forever! Props to those that can! |

Did 100 Fly in 1.02 after the 30x400 BTW it was 350 Free/50 Fly send off of 5:20 with extra rest at half to us the can and top up the bottle. One of the hardest days in the pool. Another hard set was 10x150 m on 1.45 send off at the tail end of a 9000m swim. Thats a 17.30 1500 just for the send offs. 100x100 at age 11 makes this stuff seem not crazy. |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Can you swim forever? I came across this a couple of years ago and was really tempted. Would probably want to combine swims with some hiking and/or biking, though. For those who love destination swimming, I recommend Lake Bled in Slovenia. Came across this gem on a bike tour (Dolomites to Trieste with Bike Tours Direct). It was absolutely unforgivable that they only had us there for one night, but I did manage to get in a swim. We had pre-arranged transport connections that would have been very difficult to change or would have happily stayed several days. It's one of the only places I know to swim where you can see two major castles (one way up above on a cliff, the other on an island in the middle of the lake) while you swim. When I was there, OWS was limited to a giant outdoor "pool" (about 300m long, and a few other parts of the lake that had been roped off. Locals told me that there are races several times a year, and that in the days preceding them, there is a training course open that goes all the way across the lake. When you swim there, you see these huge fish (carp?) that are totally oblivious and swim right underneath. Lake is a tad chilly, even in mid-summer. If cold-blooded, I recommend a sleeveless wetsuit. There is also awesome biking in the vicinity (hilly) and a pleasant, shaded path that circles the lake (maybe 7-8 miles). ETA That is a featured destination in SwimTrek, for good reason. There are also some awesome smaller lakes in the whole area of Italy /Austria/Slovenia that we covered on that tour. Not sure I could identify them on a map, but pretty much every time we rode by a lake, out came the mini-wetsuit and in went me. (I took to riding in a tri suit and jersey so no change of clothing was necessary.) Pretty much all were clean and cool, with lifeguards, some shade trees, nice views of surrounding mountains and a cafe with good ice cream nearby. Edited by Hot Runner 2016-05-03 12:26 AM |
