Pre-race routine:

Woke up. Ate two pieces of toast w/ butter and jam. Drove to event. Parked. Walked to starting line. Waited with 10,000 other yellow group starters till 9:05. This race starts in waves. Yellow is the second wave to go.
Event warmup:

Jumped up and down a few times while standing amidst the mass of humanity that is the worlds largest road race.

Channeled my energy to positive motivation.

Comments:

I did well on Miles 1-5. I was at an 8:00/mi pace at 5. Lost my under 1 hr finish on miles 6, and 7. Just couldn't push hard enough.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder for racing. My training has consisted mainly of long, slow runs. Just trying to shave seconds off of long run pace each time. I will need to do 5-10K's at hard steady pace. Lots more tempo and interval stuff.
Post race
Warm down:

Nice 1/2 mile walk through shoot to get t-shirts while mixing it up with the folks.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Under trained for the circumstance.

Event comments:

Be nice to see a beer garden at the finish line with some quality craft brews from around the PNW.

Performance: Good
Mile 1: 7:43 Mile 2: 7:43 Mile 3: 8:00 Kept it at or around 8:00 the rest of the way
Course: Mile 1 is rough do to the extreme volume of people. Lots of speeding up and slowing down as you bob and weave in and out and through people. Imagine a 4 lane road (one way) taken up by people. People even run on both sidewalks on either side of the road. It's mayhem. Mile 2 is tricky because this has the most underrated hill which is after a long downhill stretch. This hill takes a lot as it flattens in the middle, then you climb an equal distant as the first part. Mile 3 has the cemetery hill which is longer than doomsday, but not as steep. It takes a lot out of your sales climbing this one. Mile 4 is the flattest stretch of the course as is mile 1 and 5.5 on. This is a good spot to make up time, only your recovering from the cemetery hill climb. Mile 5 is Doomsday. All I can say is this is a bitch to climb. It's one thing climbing in training, entirely different when your racing and there are people all around. Mile 5.5 to 7.5 is difficult as your trying to breath. Hard hot breaths hurt the chest as you push to the finish.

Good lord you were close to under an hour! I've heard the expression I'd rather be 10 minutes slow than 10 seconds slow. Hopefully you can get under next year. I was unable to run this year since I broke my clavicle on the Lilac Half Century the week earlier. I probably would have been in around 1:20 or so judging by my wife's time.

Great job anyway, still an awesome race time.

I can train for half marathons on pavement and on trails, but as soon as I change it up to gravel or loose dirt my knee swells and the pain it causes is unreal. Any ideas why this happens?
