Subject: Bike Fit question
So, I got a bike fit last week on RETUL. I appear to be between sizes on QR PR5/6 in 54/56. With long rides it seems the 56 with a higher stack would be little more comfortable, but the stand over height could be an issue if I go 56. In FELT B12 size 58 seem to be closest with reach and stack, but I would be looking at an IA I think in comparison department to the QR models.


The question is, does stand over height come in to play much these days between bikes of this close in size. Also, does anyone have any experience with these models FELT B12/IA and QR PR5/6 and care to comment pros and cons of them?

Stand over height is very important! you'll find out the first time you have to make a fast stop put your feet down and don't have any clearance.

Some things a more important than the bike.

Correct, but it's not an indication of bike fit per se. But it would definitely disqualify bikes pretty quick!

My inseam is a little shorter than the stand over height on my cx bike. You have to remember that you'll have a cleat that will add some height to you. If the fit/feel is absolutely perfect and you can stand then it should work. You can also lean your bike a little when you are standing. All that being said I prefer some room in that area personally.

Correct me if I am wrong or misunderstand

Stack is usually measured to the top/center of the headtube and if you aren't able to stand over you need less stack.

However, there is also pad stack which may be very little or a lot higher than frame stack and that will depend on spacers than can be part under or part of the stem or it can be achieved with risers under the pad.

This is where you have to be looking at a combination of the bike AND the aerobar/pads. For example with a Zipp Vulka pads you can get quite a bit of pad stack.

So if a 54 works in reach, but is too little stack you can put pad risers to get the right pad stack. Nice part about this is is you eventually manage to get lower in front, through flexibility, shorter cranks....then you simply remove some pad stack.

How is the reach on the 54 ?

The 54 is not bad. The 56 stand over is 1.08 inches higher, so not an issue imo. My fitter said longer rides would be best on 56 if standover wasn't an issue. I want to be a comfortable as possible of course, but what am I giving up on aero?

The other thing I noticed on the bikes I'm looking at is going Di2 vs not. Is there a good reason to spend that money? I don't see it, but did notice fixed tri bars with Di2 vs clip on tri bars without on the base model bike.

Should I be concerned about the bars with this from fit perspective?

When you stand over the 56 how much clearance do you have?

People who have the Di2 seem to really like it. I do not have it, and have not tried it. I see a big advantage on the tri bike as you can shift in aero and from the horns.

appears to be about 1 - 1 1/2 inches. On my road bike it's a solid 3inches of clearance flat footed.

1 to 1 1/2 is about normal, I would go with the fitters recommendations.

Ask your fitter this. If you go 56, how much drop can you eventually add ?
Currently, what is your seat to pad drop ?

"FIxed tri bars". Some "fixed" or "integrated" bars do not have as much adjustability for aero.

I have really short legs and have zero standover clearance on all of my bikes with both feet on the ground.  At 5'6", I would probably need to ride a 46 cm frame in order to get 1.5" of standover clearance over the top tube, but the bike would fit me like crap while riding unless I had a 160 mm stem or something...in which it would handle like crap.

On all my bikes I can stand flat footed with bike shoes and cleats, and my crotch will touch the top tube.  That's enough for me to jump on and off my bike, come to sudden stops, etc without issue.  You just lean the bike a few degrees if needed.  When stopped, such as at lights, regrouping spots, etc...there really is no need to unclip both feet and stand over your bike.  Without any standover clearance, when stopped, I have no trouble sitting over my top tube with one foot clipped in like these guys.

That said, I agree with Marc that it shouldn't be necessary to go a size up just because it has a higher stack if pad spacers are also an option.  Usually you only choose a bike based on stack if one bike won't allow you go to low enough.
