Subject: HRM Question
I am currently using a garmin premium HRM with a forerunner 910xt. I went out for a short run this morning (2.5m) and I am not sure if my numbers are reading correctly or maybe I am just not understanding how they are calculated (both on the forerunner itself and on training peaks). For the first mile I know that I never even broke 140bpm yet training peaks is showing that my average was 137 bpm with a max of 169? So the average makes sense, but I don't get the max. For the second mile I know I was around my target rate of 144-148 bpm (as I was looking at my watch throughout the mile), but training peaks is showing an average of 169 and a max of 177 bpm. Not getting why its so high. Then the third lap (which was the last .5m) shows an average of 178 and a max of 186. Now I picked up my pace in the last 100m but I really don't think my HR would get that high from a slight increase in pace.

Any thoughts? Am I just not understanding this stuff?

Training peaks doesn't do any calculations. It just gets the information from the watch. It will be the same as what the watch shows-- but maybe your watch is showing something other than HR. Do you have pictures of your HR graphs (either from Training Peaks or Garmin Connect)? That would help understand the data.

Jennifer let me know if this works. So just to clarify I ran 1.50 miles too a couple minute break to stretch and then ran another mile and increased pace in the last 100m or so. But I don't get the max on the first mile or how the numbers were so high for the second mile because like I said my garmin was showing bpm in the mid to high 140's during that second mile.

Hmm, I don't know what to say-- the TP graph doesn't look like it's using the same data for some reason. It's hard for me to tell. What does your graph from Garmin Connect look like?

Thanks for the response Jennifer. I really don't get it at all. Here is the chart from Garmin Connect. Both just do not seem accurate. Almost like my 910 was showing one number but logged something completely different.

OK, I don't know what to say-- the two graphs are the same (although TP has a bit more smoothing) but it doesn't match what you say you saw on the watch. I can only wonder whether the field on the watch was reading what you though it was reading...

I don't have any issue with the watch displaying something different than what the graph shows in GC or TP.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.
