Not sure if this is political or not, but I am tired of threads about bathrooms...

I have a new show I can't stop watching, it's called 60 Days In. (I think it is on A&E) Anyways the story line goes like this:

New sheriff takes over a county prison after former Sheriff is indicted on charges.

New Sheriff wants to find out what is gong on in the prison and selects 7 innocent individuals to go "undercover" and serve 60 days in the prison and then report back to him what they see from an inmates views on both the prison and the guards.

No one knows they are plants except for the Sheriff and two others in LE.

They are doing a documentary in the prison on the first time felons and that is the disguise for the tv crews.

Each participant has a different reason for volunteering. One thinks that prison is too easy, one is a cop and wants to experience things from the other side, one has a brother in jail doing 5 years and wants perspective.

I am finding this show fascinating, and it is apparent that some of the volunteers had no idea what they were signing up for.

Anybody else see this show?

Is it a documentary? Reality show? Or feature?
It reminds me of the Zimbardo's prison experiment that I am now analyzing for my psychology of evil class I have to find this show, sounds very interesting.

I might have to check it out.

Ironically I got to experience county jail for 60 days myself several years ago and it's an amazing experience that has changed my perspective on many things.
The majority of people in jail are good people that get hooked on drugs or caught up in gangs and do bad things as a result.  When they're sober, they're actually quite fun to hang out with.

without a doubt. If anyone has a really bad time I hope its Robert. I do not like his "I am doing this because prison is just to easy attitude."

episode 7 and wow surprised how things turned out so far.

I will say one thing I hate is how putting innocent people behind bars never been done before. This is not completely true. Plenty of innocent people in prison but I understand what they they are saying.

This weekend I will finish it up.

I can't speak for prison, but when I was in jail I'm pretty sure 100% of people were innocent.  Just ask them.  ;-)

On a serious note I don't think it's a huge percentage overall, but I would say it is a significant percentage.  Another serious issue is that if an accused individual is poor and truly innocent there is a significantly higher percent chance of him being convicted versus somebody with means.

So there are far more innocent poor people in prison than rich people.

I think you likely have that equation backwards.  The correct equation is that there are far more guilty rich people who go free then there are guilty poor people who go free.

What I want to know is how many people do you think are in prison who are innocent?  You really can't include jail.....certainly there are people in jail who are innocent and awaiting trial......but jail and prison are two different animals.

Yes.....poor people are at a disadvantage when it comes to defending their innocence, and could end up in prison as a result......but how many innocent people are in prison?  Is there a study somewhere?  Is there a number you think is correct?

I don't think I've ever put an innocent person in prison.......but I know plenty of people who I know were guilty who didn't go to prison.

Also.....keep in mind as you watch this show, the people who run and work in our actual jails/prisons are some of the dimmest bulbs in the criminal justice system.  Most of them have good intentions but they are limited by resources, circumstances, and their own intelligence. (not unlike life outside of prison)

well number is not huge like 50% I heard estimation as high as 10,000 a year. Its hard to say though because percent of innocent people in jail vs number that ultimately get release is so low because its so difficult to get a conviction reversed.

https://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/ronhuff.htm

Though in a county jail like that isn't everyone technically innocent because they not been proven guilty yet?

number of people who are never arrested for a crime who are willing to go to jail looks like 7 now.

I would hope so. I have a lot of respect as a law enforcement officer and I hate to lose it.

on the same note I am sure any cop than interviews someone for 8+ hours until they get a confession or plants evidence only does it because they do not want to see a guilty person go free. There lies a big reason why you have number of innocent people in prison.

this numbers below only are people who were released because DNA.

To me the scariest number there is "28%: Involved false confessions"

http://www.innocenceproject.org/dna-exonerations-in-the-united-stat...

We don't no how many people are truly innocent in prison otherwise they should not be there. Just like we do not know number of innocent people who end up plea bargaining because they figure 2 years is better than risking 10 so they do not want to take it to trial.

I had a friend who I used online game with who was innocent (of attempted murder of his wife) but plea bargained to a lesser crime so he could get out (and the state did not have to pay him money) rather than waiting for trial and risk losing. Technically he was found guilty of a crime but was innocent. i lost contact with him so I hope he does not regret his decision. Plus I wonder if they ever looked into the ex bf who was also in the area minutes before the crime happened who had no reason to be in the area.4

I don't worry about that kind of stuff......don't give it a thought.

I ask the question about innocent people in prison because I'm truly interested in where Policing and the Criminal Justice System is heading.  There was a day when I would have told you that planting evidence and throw down guns and getting confessions that were not voluntary were things seen mostly in the movies......but I question that now.  I think it's still a small minority of Officers who would do those things.....but I'm starting to think the amount may be more then I ever considered.

Still......I don't think we ought to pretend prisons are full of innocent people.....I doubt that.  They may be full of people who's crimes don't warrant incarceration since they pose no physical danger to the rest of us.....but innocent of the crime they were convicted of?  Nah.....not many.

I would agree with you there but I think its more than people think but not a huge number. Attorney Dean Strang talked about a case where they had 3 people in jail for same murder where only 1 person could have done it. It means in that case there are 2 people who are innocent but as you said its very very small percentage.

population is exploding which is I think also a problem.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/54/US_incarceration...

About people who should not be there. Looking at the graph below if you assume half the robbery is for drugs and would not be there in drugs were legal. it would mean in the 2.3 mil in prisons and jail that 450k to 500k would not be there. Now that is a big percentage.

I am call caught up and wow Robert and Jeff had problem. Though some of Roberts actions really surprised me.

I do not think Jeff is going to be a corrections officer now.

Scary how some people seem to be made for prison or at least can adapt too easily for it.

I know if I was in Jail I might be the next Jeff but then again I am too cheap to give up my commissary.

Sounds like a really interesting show.  I'm gonna check it out.

Have any of you watched The Experiment (2010)?  I think they updated it with a remake called The Stanford Prison Experiment though I haven't seen that one.  The premise is 26 random men are chosen to participate in the roles of guards and inmates as part of a psychological study.  Gets pretty instense fairly quickly.

Ok I had change my response. I was thinking both were more reality for documentary the show 60 days in. Turns both are based on the actual Standford prison experiment. I will have to see atleast the standford prison experiment one since its on netflixs.

I wonder if being a police officer made it difficult for Tami or more of her personality. As she said if they were on the outside things would go down really differently. She seemed to have some of that bully attitude some law enforcement officers have. I think its more personality because her wife was like hey relax and not be you. Either way sad to see that they kept her in there the longest.

Now that you have seen it an d caught up, here are my thoughts;

Tami is not as tough and strong as she thinks. She got really flustered when she lost control and really couldn't handle it if people did not go along with her.

Barbra changed the most I think. She adapted and survived did well.

Robert is a joke and has no idea of how to read people. He is in his only little bizarre world.

Jeff is not cut out to be a correctional officer. He would get eaten alive.

Isaiah hopefully learned from this and as a 19 yr old will never end up in prison again.

Zac did the best. He fit in and saw what was going on, and IMO was the only one that was truly helpful.

next week is the last show were they get to meet each other and it should be fiery!

Tami. I think your right. Probably why she likes being a cop because she likes having the control the badge gives you. I do think she got picked on early and had a bad cell for a long time which did not help. No sleep will cause a lot of those issues she had.

Barbra. Yeah from meek mouse to pod boss. Yeah she really got strong. She like Robert though maybe prison was too easy going in I hope they address that question. Either that or I missed it.

Jeff. Yeah I think he going to go another career route. I think he should hung in there a little more and things would been better. Having someone going completely crazy on you and your trapped with them is scary though but I always felt he was going to tap out.

Robert. He is a big talker and won't ever change. I known a couple guys like him. Only thing right he did was to get involved with the bible study but he even managed to screw that one up. You just have to be natural and he is anything but.

Zac. He is the prison man. He adapted quickly maybe because of being in the military is not much different from prison . He kept his focus. I found it great how he befriended Isaiah. I hope they keep in touch.

Isaiah. Wow that boy almost stayed there. I think his mom came in the nick of time.

Yaz or Mayrium?. I think interesting to see the 3 girl meet. I wonder if she learned anything out of this. I almost though there was going to be an issue between her and Tami which would be funny/sad if they went down for fighting when its the last people who should been fighting.

Most interesting part of all of this is how quickly they all became prisoners. While they had a job to do I think Tami and Zac stayed focus on the task at hand where others tried to survive.

Some ways I wonder if prison is easier than this Jail because at least in prison you can go out side and probably get more sleep. Though I think they got access to way more snack foods than maybe you would in a prison.

Watched the last episode where they all come together last night and I was glad to see them not hold back on Robert and Jeff.

It's sad that Robert and Jeff don't get it.

I was also shocked to hear that Zac's wife is on the inside currently filming the second season!!!!  Did not see that coming and I am not sure I'd want my wife to participate in this experiment.

I finally saw it over the weekend. I wonder if Jeff would want a do over since he made so many bad mistakes I am sure he would do a lot better the second time. Though he does just seem too weak to be a corrections officer. Though his cover story might fit how he looks I think it did not help. In theory if you get arrested for stealing money you probably have some to use while in jail.

Yeah I can't believe Zac wife going in either. Especially since now they have to be just that much apart from each other. Though I am sure its not back to back. If its the same jail I bet I would think filming should be over before they announced it on TV like that otherwise I think the "prisoners" would be in trouble. I am sure word got out in that jail.

find it interesting too how guys all figured who was in there but they ladies never did and even brought the drama back. I wonder if the lady was pregnant and if anything happened to her while in there.
