Ironman 70.3 Chattanooga - Triathlon

View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Chattanooga, Tennessee
United States
World Triathlon Corporation
Total Time = 5h 32m 27s
Overall Rank = 604/2296
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 5/95
Pre-race routine:

Not the norm, which is pretty much just coffee & almond butter pancake sandwich. Had to get going earlier to swap out P1 pedals before swim start. So up early and to transition to get those swapped and to put all my stuff with my bike. It's been so long since I have done anything other than a full IM I was struggling with what to do race morning at the bike. So used to packing and dropping T1/T2 bags the day before.
Event warmup:

Nothing, too nervous. Found a fellow teammate and got in line with her. Another teammate showed up and the 3 of us hung out and chatted. Took my mind of being nervous. Swim line was LONG!

Comments:

Fairly easy swim. Wore wetsuit which I was dreading but it ended up being ok. Didn't bother me and they had strippers so I didn't have to worry about that. So many people doing backstroke, it was very strange.
What would you do differently?:

Start on left like I was supposed to, to keep more towards shoreline on upriver. I got in on the right and then realized my error. Not that bad though, just more bodies and current to deal with but it didn't bother me.
Transition 1
  • 06m 28s
Comments:

A bit slow, out of practice. But I did put on T1 top very fast (first time so that was good), and didn't forget anything.
What would you do differently?:

Practice to cut down on time.
Bike
  • 2h 45m 5s

Comments:

Overall good ride. Lost my flat repair kit on one of the early RR tracks and circled back but never found it. Course was very crowded, and I felt like I either had to slow down or surge ahead to not be in draft zone. So many people clearly do not know that they should move to the right hand side, I was constantly saying "on your left" and having to repeat over and over because they wouldn't move over. My goal was to finish under 2:45 so pretty happy with this ride.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, figure out a better flat repair kit storage option, better BTA hydration solution, work on better fit, and continue to build bike power.
Transition 2
  • 04m 49s
Comments:

Faster than T1! Still slow but transitions are a work in process for me.
What would you do differently?:

Practice
Run
  • 2h 04m 5s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Really great run for me. Been injured so run training was minimal. I had no idea how this was going to go, but it really couldn't have gone any better. I did a run/walk plan that was loosely structured and dictated by hills and aid stations. I modified some but pretty much followed that plan. Went well and I finished on Cloud 9!
What would you do differently?:

Not be injured so I can really put in the appropriate run training.
Post race
Warm down:

Water and walking, followed by a few beers with the tri club.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Limited running - but really this is a great pace for me even when not injured so no complaints!

Event comments:

Chattanooga is a great town. Everyone is so friendly, lots of nice places to eat, things to do for family. Overall a great race in a great location.

I just finished the NYC marathon on Sunday and I think I'm going to venture into triathlons. I am doing an Olympic distance and I want to do a 70.3 next year too. Any advice?

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
