Has anyone raced in this event before? I'm from Virginia and was looking for more info regarding race weather. I read online the water could be high 50-low 60s. Any insight would be helpful!

Swim will be very cold.  As in high 50s. Low 60s would be a warm year

Air temps will be cold to start as well (40s-50s) but typical weather would warm up nicely to 70s.  Although last year (or 2 years ago?) it rained and heard it was miserable.

Depending on the distance, all legs can be multiple loops.   Other than a little bump going out of the park where the swim is, very very (very) flat bike.  Some wind expected, very few marshalls the year I did it and lots of drafting.   Run is also, as you guessed, flat.

Other than drafting issues, HITS is a well run event.  ALso pretty low key which is a nice change from some larger races.

I looked into last year and recall that the prices were very high IMO.  I got in on an early reg. discount, not sure I'd pay full boat for that race.

Not exactly flat anymore. They changed the route for this year, at least for the full distance. You will climb Box Canyon, turn around and roll back down, then turn around and climb it again. Not the steepest climb around but about 17 mile climb. My concern is the long descent with little spinning to tighten up the legs and then to have to climb it yet again.

Thanks, that's good to know and makes at least the bike more attractive.   But a 6 loop run....  ugh,,,,,,

Training in the cold can be effective and fun with some planning. Overall, prepare for the environment, stay hydrated and dry, listen to your body and have a great safe cold weather outing.
