Pre-race routine:

Drove the 400+km to Albany on Saturday and stayed over night with K, E and Mum. Once we got checked into our hotel we drove to the race venue and did a reccy of the course so we knew what we were in for. It was a good idea because we took a wrong turn and got a little bit lost. There was much laughter about Mum attempting to kill us again with her bad driving.

Race briefing was at 8:15 and start for the 10k was at 9. So got up at 7 got dressed, had a cup of tea and a banana and headed the the race venue about a 20 minute drive away. Parked and walked the very short distance to the race venue. Stood around for a bit waiting for the race briefing.

When the HM guys started some weird lady came up and started talking at us (yes at). A real kind of look at me lady, she had on a 2015 New York Marathon training shirt, so E asks her if she has done the race and her reply was "oh no my husband did it last year." E used to play Hockey for Northern Ireland and she does not handle posers at all well so her and Mum decided to take our jackets back to the care to get away from her. K and I eventually escaped to go to the loo.
Event warmup:

It was pretty cold so we found a patch of sun and waited for the race start.
Run
  • 1h 09m 32s
  • 10 kms
  • 06m 57s  min/km
Comments:

E is heaps faster than me so she took off and Mum and K were both aiming for 1:30 so they stayed together which meant I was able to run at my pace. I started I out steady with my standard 4/1 run/walk. I felt pretty good and settled, but my right leg was a bit sore from around 1k until around the 3k mark when it just went away.

At around the 4k mark I started to get passed by the HM guys on their second lap I also started to catch and pass 10k runners, which I was very excited about. I steadily passed people right up to the end of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really I guess with more consistent training I will begin to get faster.

Overall I'm pretty happy I had a goal time of 1:15 and I beat that by over 5 minutes which I'm really pleased about.
Post race
Warm down:

Found E and we walked back and found Mum and K. They were about 1k out so we ran in with them.

Event comments:

Good very low key race, which I might do again depending on timing.

Lookin' good out there on the course!  Congratulations on crushing your goal time!

Who would wear a race tee for a race that they did not complete? I mean, maybe for yard work but to an event that you'll be speaking at?  Poser is right!

She's a goal crusher!!!  Great job!!  I see lots of smiles in those pictures.  It's nice it worked out that you and E could do your own thing without worrying about K and your mum, they could keep each other company.

Congrats on crushing your goal time and having a great race!!  It's great that you raced with your mother and K, i find racing with friends and family always makes the race better.

I guess I should tell you and Janyne that I will wear a race shirt for races I haven't done! If I've paid my entry and something comes up that I can't compete, I figure I've run enough races that I don't care if I did run that exact one.  Don't tell anyone

The XTERRA off-road triathlons consist of a lake swim, a mountain bike trail ride, and a trail run. I decided to try the AZ Xtreme Desert XTERRA Tri as my 1st off-road triathlon, and my 3rd tri ever.
