Fox Island Sprint Triathlon - Triathlon

Fort Wayne, Indiana
United States
Tri-state Triathlon
72F / 22C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 08m 17s
Overall Rank = 6/55
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 1/5
Pre-race routine:

Set up transition, get race packet, get marked
Event warmup:

A little bit of a swim warm up. A couple of 25-50 yard swims in lake. Not much time for warm ups
Swim
  • 10m 16s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 03s / 100 meters
Comments:

Could have been better but missed line on first buoy and had to do a hard 45 degree swim to get to outside of buoy. Was probably about 15-20 yards inside of buoy when I got to about 15-20 from it. Did much better with second buoy and return swim to beach.
What would you do differently?:

Swim closer to pack. I thought they were swimming too close to shore and I was taking a straighter line for first buoy, but I was too far inside of it.
Transition 1
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

Transition still 30 seconds slower than I wanted. Need to work on this transition. May need to clip shoes and to pedals and not go with socks.
Bike
  • 31m 39s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 23.51 mile/hr
Comments:

Did well on bike. Had fastest bike time in race. Still wanted to be a bit faster. Average watts were 232 and wanted those closer to 250. Otherwise pleased with ride
What would you do differently?:

Push harder on climbs and drop gears faster on descents.
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Left T2 with watch still on bike. Had to go back and get it. Cost me about 15 seconds. Was still too slow. Wanted to be closer to 1:00.
What would you do differently?:

I forgot my squirt bottle and instead had a water bottle with cap. Must have squirt bottle to save 5-10 seconds on T2 hydration. Also, make watch removal part of run to T2, probably at dismount.
Run
  • 22m 13s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 26s  min/km
Comments:

Struggled getting water at 1/2 way point. Tried to drink on run and choked on water.
What would you do differently?:

Forego water. It was only 5k. Didn't really need it.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed food and Gatorade and walked 1/4 mile

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Transitions were not strong and swim was off course on first buoy. Otherwise good race.

Event comments:

What makes this race so great is the venue. Bowman Lake is a geat swim, bike has great surface with moderate hills and run is flat and has great shading. If you want to do a race where you have a shot at a PR, this is the race for you. The course is set up well for a fast time because the conditions are in great shape. One of best triathlon venues I have raced on. The registration however is not well organized. Recommend they do packet pick ups night before.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
