 439   nashville, Tennessee |  Subject: Helmet fitSo I need someone to tell me if I'm being ridiculous or not. I've had a giro advantage a few years now but I'm thinking about changing. I'm wondering how much my current helmet could potentially be costing me speed. For one the helmet fits very loosely on me. And two, it has the long tail and I'm pretty sure I don't keep the proper head positioning at all times therefore the tail may be having the opposite effect. I really like the giro air attack shield because it has no tail so I don't have to be so concerned with head positioning. Now, I know the effects on speed are miniscule but what I want to know is, would this bother you enough to change helmets? Or is the speed effect so tiny that its not worth looking into. I know I have heard that an aero vs non aero helmet can potentially save 30-60 seconds in a 40k which to me is fairly significant. But what about an aero helmet that is loose fitting AND not kept in the right positioning? |

| 74 | Subject: RE: Helmet fit Being comfortable is everything. If you are uncomfortable and don't hold head position, that's eating into those seconds of gains you speak of. Those tests to get those figures are done on dummies in the wind tunnel and they don't move a millimeter. Those results would look a LOT different if they pointed the tail of the helmet into the air in the wind tunnel. if aero road helmets really were "slow", pros wouldnt wear them at kona, but they do (the heat, I know, but that's a factor for most of us in races at one point or another). I vote for comfort and fit. Air attack. Moving from aero helmet with poor head position to aero road helmet isn't going to cost you a minute over 40k. I don't have math to prove that, but that's just my opinion. |

For what its worth, I have an Air Attack but I'm looking for something faster and as comfortable. It's hard, even in a good-sized city such as Nashville, to find shops with a variety of aero helmets to try on. The Giro Aerohead is new...not sure how it tests but I'm sure it's faster than the Air Attack. With respect to road helmets, I'm pretty sure the Giro Synthe or the Specialized Evade test faster than the Air Attack. I'm looking at the Aerohead, Lazer Wasp, and Catlike Chrono. |

KASK Bambino is an excellent choice (as long as it fits you well, that it very important for safety even more so than for aerodynamics and comfort). If you know you're not keeping your head still, a short tail helmet will reduce the penalty of head movement. |

| 538 Brooklyn, New York | Subject: RE: Helmet fit Dude, I just crashed HARD on my head with a well snug fitting helmet which was "road Aero" (Ballista) . Please make sure that helmet whatever it is fits right. That thing literally saved my life, barely a shift from the riding position. By the way, I loved it for both comfort and a non tail aero. I don't have quantified data points of improvement, but I know it felt wayyy better than a road |
