Total Time = 8h 00m
Overall Rank = 31/88
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 9/22
Pre-race routine:

Drove up the day before. Picked up my packet and drove to the race site. I had ridden the bike course the month before and informed the RD that part of the course was closed. They had to re-route the course. 4th year running the race in a row - 3rd bike course. Drove the course and then headed to father-in-laws.

Woke up, ate my oatmeal and was out the door. Got there plenty early for me. Totally shocked - the said the water temp was 68 on Saturday and then suddenly 80 on Sunday?? How was that even possible?
Event warmup:

Setup my transition area and did typical warm up. Was not feeling that great but figured it was going to be ok.
Swim
  • 28m 30s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 54s / 100 meters
Comments:

One of the hardest swims of my triathlon career. Wind was blowing into us on the way out with a string current pushing us on the main stretch. By the time we made the turn for home. we were in the cove so we did not get as much of the current as we could. I was a 5 minutes slower than last year (wet suit legal with calm waters). I was plain tired after the swim. I am string swimmer and that was tough
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

I was busy trying to catch my breathe and re-assess what just occurred.
Bike
  • 59m 53s
  • 40 kms
  • 40.08 km/hr
Comments:

Course was 4 miles short; my lack of biking outdoors this season - we have had a cool,. wet spring showed up. I was not disappointed with my time. I was passed by more folks than usual. Felt like I was spinning up fine.
What would you do differently?:

GO harder
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

It had poured rain the night before so I did not want to run through the mud in my bare feet
Run
  • 52m 8s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 13s  min/km
Comments:

This run is HOT - asphalt with no shade at all. The part from the trail to the far turn around and back is just a slug fest.
What would you do differently?:

I had no data on my speed. I ran the entire thing except for stopping at the half way point to drink water which was planned
Post race
Warm down:

Drank fluids

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I had a big family trip the weekend before - and knew I was less than 100% rested. I ran the race last year injured and posted s similar time. I had been travelling a good bit and was just not all there.

I enjoy the race for what it is. We did not really have much warm weather until you guessed it - that weekend. Literally was the warmest day of the year.

Event comments:

I do this race now for 4 years in a row. It falls on the same weekend as Raleigh, which means this race is smaller. It is out in the country whichi s great for bike ride but not much crowd. The run course is pretty flat but just plain hot. The swim is always interesting - 2nd time in 4 years with a good chop. Tough for beginners

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

Knowing where the fluids are, how they will fit on your bike, how much to reach for, and when to reach for it should be understood prior to ever setting foot on the course.
