Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

World Triathlon Corporation
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 8h 38m 2s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 99/120
Pre-race routine:

Estimated finish time of 8:36:32 updated to 8:38:02 on Ironman website.
Swim
  • 56m
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started with the 46-55 minute group.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster. Everything else was fine.
Transition 1
  • 08m 7s
Comments:

It was a long trip from the beach to transition, and then from transition to the bike mount area. My wetsuit got caught on my timing chip strap, and I had to struggle with that a bit. Took a few seconds extra to put my wetsuit, goggles, and cap in a plastic bag, as they had advised.
What would you do differently?:

Would probably skip this in the future and just throw them over the bike rack, as I usually do.
Bike
  • 4h 00m 26s
  • 56 miles
  • 13.97 mile/hr
Comments:

Went through three Aerodrink bottles of Gatorade and PowerAde. Ate three Clif bars and two salty sweet nut bars. One pee stop at a park bathroom. Rode most of the way with the same group of people, but then I think I fell behind with about 15 miles to go and rode the rest of the way solo.
What would you do differently?:

Ride faster.
Transition 2
  • 06m 46s
Comments:

Could barely walk when I got off my bike. I was really wobbly and had to take it easy so I wouldn't fall. Pee stop at the transition porta potties. Stopped for sunscreen.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe pee myself instead of using the porta potty and also not stop for sunscreen.
Run
  • 3h 26m 43s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 15m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

I hurt. Every part of my body hurt. And I started getting leg cramps the last four miles. I probably walked most of the course.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know. I gave it everything I had. Sadly, I finished 8:02 after the cut-off time (8:30:00), so the race counts as a DNF for me.
Post race
Warm down:

Pizza and watermelon.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My body.

Event comments:

Great race venue, lots of volunteers, and lots of locals turning out to cheer us on. Sadly, although this would be a great first race, it was still beyond my abilities at this time as I finished 6:32 after the 8:30:00 cutoff, so it counts as a DNF. They still gave me a medal and finisher's had when I crossed the finish line. So, I'll have to try again next year!
