I have lower back issues stemming from a previous injury (spondylolisthesis - pars fracture between two vertebrae).  I've been able to recover and have completed several triathlons and up to a half marathon, but I had to adjust my expectations and be really cognizant of both my form and my core training (read:  LOTS of planks).

If she's willing to deal with a few bad days here and there, she can certainly enjoy the triathlon lifestyle and the physical fitness could actually help the back injury.

Definitely work core. I just had surgery at l3/4. The rehab exercises that helped me most were bridges, dead bugs and seated figure 4. All of these exercises done while concentrating on holding a pelvic tilt. Once the pelvic tilt is learned through muscle memory, she should be able to maintain the tilt while walking and eventually running. Holding a pelvic tilt will open the area between the discs and relieve some of the pressure put on the nerves.I thought these exercises were silly and just an excuse for the rehab people to bill my insurance. However, I went to rehab anyway and eventually they really did make a difference.

I know that annular tears mean there is a risk for a bigger disc blow-out. How do I continue to train and compete without putting myself at risk for worsening of my injury?

A few years ago, I was diagnosed with two lumbar herniated discs (L1-L2). I have started a very slow build towards my first tri. Are there any recommendations or warnings I should heed?
