Overcast
Total Time = 1h 12m 34s
Overall Rank = 16/115
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 1/8
Pre-race routine:

Set up transition, talk with teammates and friends
Event warmup:

Outside temp was too cold (55 deg) to do warm up swim. So no warm up. Slept poorly coming into the event.
Swim
  • 12m 2s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 25s / 100 meters
Comments:

Worst swim of year and possibly worst swim I have done in a triathlon. Got off to poor start by swimming in 2nd row of wave and swimmers in front were to slow and hit their legs. In trying to go around them, got off course and had to re-direct. Sighting was poor and breathing was poor.
What would you do differently?:

Go to outside and make sure I was in first row of wave. Going to outside would have allowed me to get into a better swim/breathing rhythm.
Transition 1
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Uneventful.
What would you do differently?:

May not wear the swim skin on a shorter swim as it took about 5-10 seconds to get off.
Bike
  • 34m 45s
  • 12.75 miles
  • 22.01 mile/hr
Comments:

My start was a little slow, but once I got going was able to get into a groove. Ran into a firm headwind on stretch of Highway 3 that is normally a fast section, so that slowed me up a bit more than expected. Wattage was 219, wanted it at 250 for race, so should have pushed a bit hard throughout.
What would you do differently?:

Get out a bit quicker and dropping the hammer a bit harder
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Uneventful transition
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Run
  • 23m 29s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 42s  min/km
Comments:

Decent run for me. Lost about 30 seconds in first mile due to cramps in both my calves and hamstrings. Legs came back at start of 2nd mile and felt pretty good from there out. Could have pushed a bit more than I did, but overall not bad. Improved by over a minute last year.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Perhaps start final kick a bit sooner.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much other than hydrate, eat and wipe down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor sleep the night before. No doubt.

Event comments:

KPC is one of the most organized races out there. Great volunteers and a great course. Bike course is nice. Run is tough because it is a cross country course, so no PR there. Swim is straight forward. The waves start in a bit of a tight group. Would be nice if there was more room to spread out on swim start. Post race is nice with great food and nice awards ceremony. A bit skimpy on prizes and there should be medals for those that complete the race. Age awards are a bit skimpy too.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
