Steamboat Lake State Park, Colorado
United States
Without Limits Productions
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 29m 39s
Overall Rank = 46/157
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 1/6
Pre-race routine:

Got up made a bowl of oatmeal - sat overlooking the lake as I ate, drove to the race site, got marked and set up transition
Event warmup:

hour before race time Ran out about 5 minutes on the back half of the run course and returned, found port o let, then took the bike out to the park entrance and back, easy spin up the climbs, figured out line for turn. Squeezed into wetsuit, got in the water slowly went under, did about 25 yards out then back and went to shore awaiting start.
Swim
  • 16m 55s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

I don't think this was anywhere near 1/2 mile. I got in the water went out easy, drifted to the right but adjusted. Eventually to to the first buoy and made the turn "south" partway through here I couldn't breathe/catch breath. Abandoned my typical 3 stroke breathing to going everystroke on the right. It worked to keep me moving. Made the next buoy and this time the ladies wave was starting to catch me - and headed for home. was behind and catching one guy but not steady enough to draft effectively. Got to the beach happy it was over. walked from there to the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

train, be small so the wetsuit fit, not pop a seam the day before
Transition 1
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

used the walk to recover from the swim. Got the suit off ok, everything else just fell into old habits, got the bike and got moving.
What would you do differently?:

for where I was at, nothing. better swim fitness would lead to running from water to transition spot.
Bike
  • 37m 52s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 19.65 mile/hr
Comments:

Just wanted to spin easy up the hills to save myself because of no run fitness. Didn't really push anywhere on the bike. Stayed Aero on the descent instead of tucking in the drops. capped out at 44 mph. Made the turnaround and on the way back got smoked by a couple climbing back up that descent. worked way back to the park and transition, almost fell getting the foot down
What would you do differently?:

ride more over the last 2 months.
Transition 2
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

Went through the motions and repeated the mantra, slow is smooth, smooth is fast
What would you do differently?:

nothing for where I am at
Run
  • 32m 36s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 09m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

I just wanted to keep in motion. I did end up walking the hill in the first mile, but over the course of the walk, I only lost 5 seconds to someone who had passed me earlier on the run. Stopped to get something out of my shoe at the 1.5 mile mark then just kept moving on the way home
What would you do differently?:

Train/run
Post race
Warm down:

nothing, got water, and talked

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not training for it properly - I was happy with how I did and the resulting time was better than I deserved for what I put into preparing for the race.

Event comments:

It was a fun race in a beautiful location. First timer friendly, but had some super fast individuals as well. Without Limits puts a lot of effort into having a good race experience

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.
