We took a beautiful day hike in the Ansel Adams Wilderness area. This is Lake Ediza and the Minarets in the background

Yeah, it's a beautiful area. To clarify a bit; we actually stayed at Mammoth Lakes, Ca. To access the trailheads, we went to the Mammoth Mountain ski area. From there you catch a shuttle down to the trailheads. Mammoth Lakes is a great little town with tons of lodging options and lots of good restaurants.

Bring the bug spray if you hit the trails! We were there two years ago and intended to stay out for 3-4 nights. The bugs were so bad you couldn't eat without them swarming your mouth as you raised your face net! We arrived right as the main mosquito hatch was happening! We canceled after one night and came in. This year there was a decent breeze blowing in that helped, plus I think we missed the main hatching by a couple weeks.

I'll second that on the bug spray.  I camped with my kids at Twin Lakes in Mammoth once several years ago, and I can recall stepping out of the car in the evening as we arrived at the campground and being in a cloud of mosquitoes almost instantly.  Of course, these mosquitoes weren't like the ones we encountered in Alaska, which were difficult to distinguish in size from the bald eagles.

If you are a person who feels safer on the trails rather than the road, but you still want to race, this article will help you better train.

A Walmart bike, a borrowed road bike or a new carbon fiber bike? You don't need to break the bank for your first triathlon bike.

I read somewhere about "bar ends" to put on your handle bars, do you recommend them? Is this similar to adding clip on aero bars?

The XTERRA off-road triathlons consist of a lake swim, a mountain bike trail ride, and a trail run. I decided to try the AZ Xtreme Desert XTERRA Tri as my 1st off-road triathlon, and my 3rd tri ever.

Well I said that I was not going to do it this season, but I cracked. I broke down and bought a new bike. I went out and bought a shiny new Cannondale road bike.

So after about 10,000 emails, dozens of phone calls, and one pre-race pasta dinner, the 1st meeting of the Steve's in a triathlon finally arrived.
