i did finish so it was successful, but my swim was horrific. i was riding the best ride of my life, making up time and passing people, i was passing everything, including the turn around area. i went a extra 5 miles (2.5 out then back). i know that because of the signs saying one mile to .... and i went WAY past that.
thanks for your responses. it feels good to be part of the club. now i have to figure out if i wanna change from a sprint to olympic in two weeks. i can do the run and bike. the swim was bad, really bad.

Congrats on your finishing your first one. After you get a few under your belt with no mishaps, you will still likely be talking about this one instead. Makes for better stories than a well oiled machine does.

Congrats again,

Hey, great job getting through it. You sounds like you're competitively minded, to which I can relate. What I see is that you have room to improve in the swim. Nothing wrong with that - gives you something to focus on in training. Congrats on the best ride of your life. You can have the confidence to ride fast next time, just make the right turn! Hope the run went well. Regardless, this is your starting point. Some day, you'll look back on your race, chuckle, and enjoy how far you've come.

Just my opinion, but I'd do another sprint rather than the oly in two weeks. Sounds like the swim was tough on you, why would you want to go from 400 yards to 1500 meters so quickly until you get more swim time in?

Congrats on the finish. It sounds like you have caught the bug if you are already planning your next race. Almost everyone's first race swim stinks. My first swim was horrible, too. It wasn't lack of fitness--I just couldn't get my rhythm then I got so embarrassed because I was falling way behind that it made my swimming even worse. Like you, I passed a lot of people on the bike, but I didn't ride an extra five miles. That is too funny.

What about your swim was so bad? Was it slow? Did you panic? Did you get kicked in the face or swam over? Did you get embarrassed and want to sink to the bottom of the river where no one could see how bad you were? People might be able to make suggestions based on what went wrong.

i use to swim like a fish. but i quit swimming completely a few years ago. i havnt trained for it except one swim earlier this year. the swim earlier went ok. but this was different. yes i got kicked, then somewhat panicked, then embarrassed at how bad i was doing. hten the second wave caught an passed me. i just have to find a place to swim and work those muscles again. but, it was a half mile swim with no training, and i didnt drown, lol. again thanks for all the responses.
the swim on this tri was 1/2 mile, the next one is .62. so i can do it, just not sure i want to.

I would stick to the Sprint for your next race. Iron out all those things that didn't go right the first time around and then kick your training up for a bit and see if you can find yourself a Fall Oly to do.

Congrats on your race. A new PR!!

Just be careful. The sprint tri is the gateway drug of triathlon. Before you know it you will be posting on this forum about signing up for your third IM.

Congrats on first finish. Had a similar issue in an ocean tri...kept sighting on the first buoy on the way out....never realized it broke free and was floating out to sea. Missed the lifeguAud instructions who was on a surfboard...by the time a jetski arrived and asked where I was going, I was much further out than the rest of the group.

I never imagined that 350 yards broken down into 7 REALLY long lanes would be so big! I gasped out loud and told Grady that maybe I had underestimated the swim.
