I've had my bike for less than 1 year and after my front brake cable snapped on my last ride, I took it in for service. I mentioned to the technician that my shifting hasn't been working perfectly and I just received a call that he recommends I get new housing and cables and also that my chain is starting to go. Is this common on a new bike? I have less than 1,000 miles ridden on it.

Much of it depends upon where you ride, where you store, and how you care for your bike.  1000 miles seems quite low for cables to need replacement.  1000 is low for chain, but if you ride in dirty conditions and fail to properly clean and lube the chain it'll shorten its life.

I find life to be much less stressful when you just trust your wrench. If you get to the point where you don't think you can. . . take the bike to a new one. If your wrench says new cables and chain. . .then new cables and chain it is. That's why you should always try to develop a good relationship with your local shop.

if your brake cable snapped after a year, you are riding with corrosive conditions. Probably a lot of rain, or sweat.

So it is not unusual to have the cables deteriorate. Especially if you have internal routing in the frame.

For example, on my Cervelo P2c, sweat drips down into the top tube on the rear brake cable and it will rot the cable internally, and then of course snap if I don't replace it in time.

Also chains need to be replaced otten if you are putting a lot of miles on the bike. Chains are cheap compared to overall drivetrain. They will destroy your gears if you let the chain wear go and also if you don't clean and lube your chain often.

When I was bike racing pretty much full time, and putting in hundreds of miles a week, I would change the chain out on my bike a few times a season. But that was back in the 8-speed days and the Sedisport chains were dirt cheap. It kept from having to replace the cassettes and chainrings, though.

As for cables, I've only ever snapped one in my life, and that was a tri bike that was hung up for a year after a race with no maintenance done (sweat was held in the cable guides under the BB and ate through the cable). I've had Gore cables last for close to 20 years on a couple bikes, and they were ridden in some really messy conditions (PacNW year-round road bike). So it varies with the cable system, the maintenance done, and the environment they're used in (and stored in).
