For all we know, the greatest long course triathlete of all time got cut from his Olympic team this year.

I'm talking about right now. I don't think it's possible to be trained up for LC and SC at the same time. Hence my previous comments that's it's futile to compare the two or say one is "best". That's all.

Or....maybe we'll see one of the Brownlee's in Kona? Why not?

Some guys can make the "jump" immediately (see the Gomez example). Other top-level ITU guys take a few years to make the switch, and some find they can never cut it at the long distance. In terms of right now, only a small number of athletes could be competitive at both. And they're all ITU guys. In some ways long-course is where ITU guys go when they get old and can't cut it at the short-course stuff anymore.

A concrete example is the recent 70.3 European Championships in Wiesbaden. That field was stacked with ITU guys (some former, some current, but obviously nobody who was going to Rio) on a course that should have favoured them. Two of them managed to crack the top 10 (Steffen Justus in 5th, Will Clarke in 9th). Now if Javier Gomez showed up, it would have made for a very interesting race, but he's the elite of the elite.

I think it's pretty likely we will see the Brownlees do Kona at some point - Alistair anyways has pretty much said as much. Whether they can be as dominant and long-course as they've been at short-course, only time will tell, but I certainly wouldn't bet against them.

Yes. That's the same one you promised to pay 1/2 the shipping for.................and didn't pay me $50.

You're proud of that enough to keep bringing it up? I would have bought it back, when I was looking..........assuming you'd discounted it for the money you didn't pay me the first time.

If I were you, Scott......I'd put down my backhoe.

LOL - like i said......the deal was you pay the shipping.  You did.  I don't remember if I felt sorry for you and offered 50 bucks or not, it was Xmas time. I see you mentioned it when you wanted to buy it back......uh......wait, you didn't.  If you need the 50 send me your address and I'll send you a check so you can get back to your life.

Dude....the bell has rang....like I added above....not a word about me owing you anything when you wanted to buy it back.  Then again.....we never got to discuss shipping.

And 'extreme' hatred was embellished but if I ever had a chance to race in DL race; I'd do it but I doubt I'd get the right experience due to the time I'd come out of the water in the swim! Haha
Fact is that ITU racing attracts the best talent and the format makes them even stronger, you can't suck at swimming and expect to be given starts by your Federation.

Careful, Bo.  Saying that doing well in DL racing requires more balanced triathletes with no significant weaknesses is heresy to some of the posters here.

Well a recent Olympic champion might be one of the least balanced of the bunch.

You mean Gwen?  11 seconds off out of the swim, top 5 bike, top run?  That recent Olympic champion?

Or did you mean Allistar?  6 seconds off oput of the swim,  4th bike, 3rd run?  That one?

Oh you know I'm just messing around.

If you use ranking for the women the next step down from Gwen would be like 12th!

nc - I would have got tired too if I made a deal and then expected someone to add to their end because I didn't know what shipping  would cost when I agreed to pay it.  Looks like you got un-tired 2 years ago.

It's been fun, but I gotta go to bed.  I'll be good to go in the morning if you want to carry on. lol

HIM adjustment seems to go right away for the DL guys nowadays. Gomez, Frodo & Don went 1-2-3 at Mont Tremblant not long ago for one example.

It's the best triathlon racing there is.  Lots of strategy and great racing.  Do you have any idea what it is to run a 30:00 10K after a bike that easily hits 1100-1400 watts out of the turns?  I've watched IM winners get schooled by 16-17 year old Jr. elites in a draft legal sprint race. It's FAST.....which is what racing is supposed to be.  Long course triathlon is a joke as far as I'm concerned....the field is full of duffers.

Ok, maybe 700-800w out of turns, I've got to call b.s. on 1100-1400. That is a massive amount of watts. It would only take a few turns before legs were being ripped off.

LOL - his avg. cadence was 104 with a 140 max as well......his legs are still attached.    Again, you guys are lost when it comes to what it takes to compete in  DL race at a high level.  For what it's worth.....he goes to 1400 at some point on nearly every computrainer workout he does with his coach.....it's a game for him.

I don't doubt that any of those pros could put down 1400+ in a sprint. But there is a difference between being able to hit 1400 at a point during a training session (which is fantastic) and jamming each corner at those kind of watts. I looked at the power files someone else posted and it seemed like they were around 600 watts out of most turns which sounds about right. Repeatedly jamming the corners at 600w is quite impressive with a 10k run to follow.

Either way, it's not the jamming of the corner that gets you, everyone knows it's going to be hard in the corners. It's how long it stays hard. And while drafting helps, if people are beating each others brains in, it gets lined out and everyone is suffering. . . a lot. Any one person in that field can ride most everyone on this board off their wheel at will. Which makes draft legal more interesting. They all have the ability, and they probably all want to beat each others brains in, but restraint has to be in their minds due to the whole running afterwards thing.

I had no idea what the shipping would cost. And, I had no reason to research it. YOU told me you'd pay the shipping .....and YOU gave me an estimate of what YOU thought it would be.

I have the PM where you stated just that......but, like I said, you should put down your shovel. Or, keep on....and I'll post it.
