I wanted new shoes but this isn't how I wanted it to happen. My shoes disappeared on me Wednesday. Some my fault but not all. Was running in asics gel-nimbus 16. They had close to 400 miles on them. They've been good to me. So I ordered the gel-nimbus 17 today should be here tomorrow. Problem is that I have a 15 mile race in 8 days. Deathly scared on calf tightness and knee/hip pain. How would you break them in and taper? In a week.

I had same apprehension about using a new pair of shoes in a HM I did a few years ago. Many here assured me that there really was no need to "break in", just do a couple of runs in them to make sure there are no weird rubbing issues. The first few runs in a new pair of shoes are the best ones, why not make one of them a race?

Not much you can do other than do your remaining runs in them to ensure no rubbing, and if there is rubbing, pre-tape problem areas.

They should be similar enough to not cause injury, but a slight change could cause rubbing in a new spot, especially when not broken in.

That said, I've thrown a shoe on in a store, then the first time I ran with it was sockless in a triathlon with no issues :p

I got a new pair of shoes on Thursday.....and ran 1/2 mi. in them......then did my HIM in them on Sunday.

I'm a Hoka guy now (used to wear the same shoes you do). So, your mileage may vary.

I wouldn't worry about it at all.  Not even a little bit.  Running shoes don't need to be broken in and the chances that the changes from the 16 to 17 will have altered the fit enough to make a big difference are pretty small.  But since you have 8 days, use them for your runs between now & then to put your mind at ease.

I would not worry too much about it. Take the advice given above and get a couple of runs in them just to set your mind at ease.

Agreed, but with the caveat that Asic didn't get cute and make a significant change between the 16 and 17.  It's not extremely common, but it's common enough that I'd take the time to check to make sure they didn't make a significant change in the lasts or the heel-toe drop from one model to the next.

ETA:  Like JK said, if they were the exact same model, they don't need any break in period.  I've personally raced a hilly HIM in shoes that had literally a mile and a half on them before the race.
