...You get kicked from two sides by breaststrokers (not complaining...it's their race too) and wind up losing your timing chip....only to turn, reach back to the general area where it would be sinking to the bottom....only to feel it...and close your fingers around it.

And end up swimming with it in your hand for .34 of a mile (didn't trust it...it started to fall off earlier while taking some practice strokes).

I'm calling it a good day. I didn't lose it. It didn't slow me too much from my usual times. I guess...I'll go back to adding a safety pin to it.

I would say it was an incredibly lucky day. I was told once that the chips float. The guy telling me this said that they usually go out a few minutes after the last wave finishes and collect the few that came loose.

I have only done two chipped races, and I pinned it on both times. They give you 4 safety pins to hold your number on, so I used three for that and one for the chip.

I volunteered at the finish line of a tri once, and it didn't take much longer to remove a pinned chip than one that was just velcro'd.

Bad day. Holding a timing chip in my hand would slow me way down on the swim. Not tomention stopping to grab it in the first place. Lucky or not that's one hell of a grab by you!

After getting stabbed by a safety pin that popped open on the swim, I now use electrical tape.  Never had a problem since.

Do you just wrap the electrical tape around your leg over the entire band?

I've bought my own band and just attach chip to it, well worth it

Just a short piece of electrical tape wrapped over the velcro strap of the timing band.

I go all the way around twice, if it does not feel secure or for longer races(1/2 IM or IM)
