Total Time = 1h 39m 25s
Overall Rank = 88/174
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 10/10
Pre-race routine:

Woke up earlier than normal as I had to complete packet pickup. Missed out on picking up earlier in the week.
Event warmup:

Stretched and relaxed. Swam briefly to get accustomed to the water temperature.
Swim
  • 09m 1s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 15s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was good. I'm getting better each time out in open water.
What would you do differently?:

There isn't much I could do differently as the wave was all males 49 and under. Too many people for the way the course was laid out because it was a mass of humanity that never really cleared out.
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Transition is always something I need to work on. I never take the time to practice it. This was a little different as there was a pretty significant run from the transition area to the mount line
What would you do differently?:

Practice transition more. Get used to it.
Bike
  • 54m 28s
  • 15 miles
  • 16.52 mile/hr
Comments:

Lots of rolling hills. Great course. Very enjoyable. The out had a very large climb but the back was easier. Left crank arm was loose and at the end of the race, I was able to just pull it off the bike. Easily lost a lot of power and speed from that. Also made gear changes very hard.
What would you do differently?:

I need to inspect my bike better prior to races. Didn't think about checking the crank arm.
Transition 2
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

This time was a little long as I hit the lap button early. Still, it was a longer than usual run from the dismount line into the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions more.
Run
  • 32m 19s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 28s  min/km
Comments:

Trail run was hard as you had to constantly be on edge because of the ground conditions. Most was just mowed grass which was VERY wet from dew. Caused my shoes and socks to be completely soaked by the end of the course. Very shaded and helped to avoid the extreme heat. It was already up to 84 by the time we were running
What would you do differently?:

I need to do more brick workouts. My pace is slower than when I just do run workouts. I need to get used to running right off the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and grabbed some food. They had Pizza Hut and lots to drink. Stretched and sat in the shade to help bring down my core temp. I'm still getting used to racing in the Georgia Heat.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My bike issues are kept me from performing faster on the bike segment and my lack of brick workouts to have a faster pace on the run.

Event comments:

Great race. I will definitely be back next year. Very good race for people wanting to cut their teeth on triathlon. The swim is open water but short and manageable. The bike course doesn't have too many huge hills and it's in beautiful country. The run is a little tough as it's all trail run and can be difficult to deal with. My shoes were pretty nasty by the end.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

A description of my experiences during my first triathlon. It was a great experience. I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been.
