Subject: Half marathon training plan
Hi BT folks,
Anyone out there have a Half marathon training plan that has worked well for them? Looking for a 12-14 week plan. I have an event first Saturday in December. Starting to transition out of Tri's for the summer and increase run emphasis. My goal time for the half will be close to 2:05:00, so not overly competitive, just want to be MOP.
Thanks!!
PS just got done looking over the Nike 14 week plan. Anyone use this? Did it work well?

I used the 3 day a week plan from the Furman Institute (FIRST) for my half marathons and even now for a full I'm training for. The 3 runs are based on a speed day, tempo day and long run day. I don't have a great back so I try to space out my runs to minimize the pounding on my body. It's worked great for me, I've improved year over year with it and my legs stay fresh and most importantly my back has held up.

Best of luck, go after that 2 hour mark!

The Hal Higdon plans were suggested to me when I asked.

Good luck!

The book run less, run faster is pretty good and has programs based on the time you want to finish in. It is a 3 day program

I think I used one of the higdon plans (intermediate?) when I did my first HM. I'm pretty sure I was running 5X/wk and topped out around 45 mpw.

I just did a 70.3 and have another in 5 wks. I can't imagine only running 3X/wk.....and the 4x/wk I'm running seem paltry.

I'm hardly an authority, though. Good luck.

I have utilized Higdon and Daniels plans as well as a couple of others. You can get a good baseline plan from them and I always customize them to fit my needs. Family, work, and life all happen so try to hit your key workouts and when life happens, move on to the next workout and don't stress. Good luck in your training!

I've used the "BarryP Plan" both for races and just to build my mileage and base. Involves running 6 days a week and is very simple to follow. It's not an actual schedule like Pfitzingers or Hal's plans, so you make the schedule yourself based on where your milage is right now.

When it comes down to it there are two ways to get faster. Either run more frequently or run the same amount but faster. Each individual responds differently, so you have to do a trial and error of sorts. I've done it both ways. The last few years I've been a fan of more frequency. It's gotten me a number of PRs from 5k to HM even though I'm on the "wrong side" of 30

Using a high-volume schedule for many months is not the best tactic. Build speed and skill several months out, and then transition to a high-volume IM plan.

This plan is an advanced plan in terms of volume and intensity and appropriate for someone who is looking to go under 5:00 and as fast as 4:30. There isn’t a lot of fluff in the plan.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
