Subject: Is it wise to do first Half IM on 6 weeks of training?
Hi everyone first post here.

I've been considering doing IM 70.3 Miami and started a 12 week training program, currently in week four. After consideration, I thought why not sign up for a local one in ME(Pumpkinman) for half the price, no hotels, no missed work, and no airfare? The local race is in 2.5 weeks, which would have been week 7 of my plan.

I've done two sprints this year and about 3 in years past. Also did Nations tri Duathlon when swim was cancelled.

The swim is my weakness, but I've been in the water a lot and have done 2.4km pool workouts and .8 OWS. I've gotten my pace to 2:05/100yd which is a gigantic improvement from even two weeks ago(3:00/100yd). I know I can do the 1.2 without struggling. I'm a runner and can do marathons, and the bike- I've done 50 and 40 mile rides last weekend. Overall, I'm feeling very strong although I know I haven't put in the long hours. These four weeks, I've been crushing my plan and hitting weights too.

I'd appreciate any experienced feedback and look forward to what everyone has to say.

Jim

It's far from ideal, but if you think you can go the distance then for for it. If nothing else it will give you a baseline on what you need to work on for the next one.

For my first I did even less training than you. Swam about 6-8 times in the 6 months prior, biked maybe a dozen times, and did some half-arsed training for a marathon a month before the HIM. Only ran once or twice in the month between races. For the HIM my goal was 6 hours and I went 5:58.

Unless you have some other factors you didn't mention, you can certainly do it.

if you are just in for a fun time, and aren't really aiming for a particular time goal, then sounds like you could do it.

generally I'd say, stick with the plan...but seems like you have decent fitness.

One thing though, if you aren't dialed in on your nutrition and hydration, this race you'll need to have a good plan.

Thanks Don and Metafizx.

My long term goal is to complete a full in 2017...after training all winter of course.

Meta- I have been working on my nutrition quite a bit, especially fueling on the bike. I have a ways to go but I am slowly learning.
I've been reading up online and educating myself.

Go in with the idea of finishing is a win and you will get just that...a win. No doubts here and best of luck my friend.

I think your nutrition is going to be on-the-job-training. But, it is for everyone, the first time.

Sounds like you'll be just fine.
