YMCA Hoot Lake Triathlon - Triathlon

View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Fergus Falls, Minnesota
United States
Fergus Falls Area Family YMCA
71F / 22C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 33m 22s
Overall Rank = 60/129
Age Group = 50-59m
Age Group Rank = 5/15
Pre-race routine:

Got set up early in transition area. Went through stuff several times.
Event warmup:

Nothing really. This was a mistake.
Swim
  • 08m 23s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim actually went well. I indicated good for overall, as it was good for me. Lake was calm, which helped.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up swimming. Did not do that for some reason. I did not want to be walking around too long in wetsuit as it was fairly humid. Should have warmed up without it.
Transition 1
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Had trouble getting into the pedals. I had shoes on, instead of having them in the pedals. Getting clipped in was a little comical and cost me about 5-10 seconds getting up to speed. Also, getting wetsuit down to ankles went fine, but always sort of a struggle at that point.
What would you do differently?:

Practice getting into pedals more. It is harder after coming out of the swim, because if you are even slightly dizzy from swim, it makes a difference getting into the pedals.
I think I was happy with T1 overall as I cut 34 seconds off from last year. In 2015, I could not get the wetsuit off ankles, even with suit juice applied beforehand.
Bike
  • 50m 18s
  • 15.7 miles
  • 18.73 mile/hr
Comments:

I could have pushed more on bike but wanted to save some for run. In 2015, I went hard on bike, and bonked hard on run.
What would you do differently?:

Train more on the bike to eliminate running out of gas on run.
Transition 2
  • 00m 47s
Comments:

T2 usually goes well for me, since I am not fighting the wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 32m 7s
  • 3.3 miles
  • 09m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

I have still not found the magic formula to run off the bike. I feel I need to put more time in on bike. Normal run pace for a 5K is 8:40. Pace for this race was 9:44. I practice Bricks too.
What would you do differently?:

Continue to practice more on bike, longer rides.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around for about 15 minutes, hydrated, ate some food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The run, but I feel connected to training on the bike. Also, and I feel this is important, I did not sleep well at all the night before!

Event comments:

This is a well run race. I can't say it is the "best", as there are other well run races too. But, I think they do a real good job running this event! It is a Sprint triathlon, but there are some "nuances" to it that really test you. As mentioned, the hill coming out of T1 and T2 really just messes with you. There is no other way to put it. Also, they had a lot of porta potties! This is appreciated by a lot of people!!

Course: Dry pavement. Some longer but not real steep inclines. Only hard hill is on north side of bike course at approx. 7 miles into the course. It is just after you cross the Ottertail river. I will say that the hill coming out of both T1 and T2 is really not fun at all. Winds were SSE at 6-7 mph. This only impacted last 6 miles of bike.

None, but I can say HR was within probably 5% of max.
Course: Mostly flat, but some deceptive inclines. Again, coming out of T2 the hill for the first .25 mile really takes it out of you. After first .25 mile, decent for about 1.5 miles. Last .55 of race is slightly uphill. The nice thing is you get to go back down that .25 incline right at the end to the finish line!

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

A description of my experiences during my first triathlon. It was a great experience. I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been.
