I did about 8 or 9 races (mainly sprints/Oly) with a couple 5k and HM in there between 2012-2014, but this Sunday will be my first time racing in 2 years. Took 2015 off with kid #2 being born and lots of home renovations and long work hours. I'm really psyched up to race again. It's a sprint I've done 3 times before so I have the general comfort of it all but it's been so long I have just enough nerves flowing thinking about it. I've biked a good amount since December, which is when the home renovation aka my new office/gym was completed, but the running and swimming has really only been concentrated on for the last 4-6 weeks. Z2 runs have felt great, pace has been dropping, same with the swim, so I'm going in oddly confident but trying to temper expectations. Anyone have any good advice for racing after a long hiatus like this?

I started racing this year after taking 6 years off. I told myself the whole point was to just have fun and see where I was at. And that's what I told everyone, too. But inside, I was struggling with some unrealistic expectations of myself. I found it fairly cathartic to write those goals down on paper and add them to the fire pit.

The nice thing is that it's a sprint distance so you really can't bonk this race, just maybe slow down a bit during the run if you over-bike. Just go out there and have fun. Be social out there setting up transition, waiting for the swim start etc. try and get into a relaxed mode. Then when the horn goes off, activate BEAST MODE and see if you can grab a podium spot!

I took about a 28 year break before starting back up again two years ago. I was definitely nervous for that first race, but it ended up being a great experience. Yep, the run was tough and for the first 1/2 mile or so I had my doubts. Then I remembered how LB used to have his signature, "There will be a day when I can no longer do this, today is not that day." I repeated that a couple times to myself, said a little prayer and remembered to relax and smooth out my breathing and concentrate on smooth running form. Ended up with a pretty solid run and a great feeling at the end. I bet you'll have a great day too!

Yeah I have some expectations which may be unrealistic but mostly because I've done this race 3 times I have some direct comparisons to make. I know I'm going to have a hard time telling my brain to relax and just cruise but we'll see.

Off topic...

I just got sucked in to your blog and went down the rabbit hole. That's a good thing. That's the term my wife and I use for things we get sucked into and can't stop. Kinda like binge watching on Netflix.

Really.....I couldn't stop. Lovely writing. And for whatever reason, it comprehensively captures what I enjoy about doing this. What that is, I can't exactly say. Part accomplishment, part wonderment, fear, anxiety, joy, excellent ways to let your obsessive flag fly....?....or some combination thereof. While, of course, being healthier and stuff.

Goggles, man. I hear you on this one. I get a pair, and absolutely....LOVE THEM.....for about an hour.

And Peggy. Perfect. Mine's Darryl. My new one doesn't have a name, but I'm leaning towards Dario. Maybe Darion.
Couldn't tell you why on either.

No advice. Hope your return is great fun, and I look forward to seeing your race report.

Thanks for all the encouragement guys. Race went as well as it could have. Got rid of some demons on the swim, had a nice smooth bike and put up my best run, and overall race time, in 4 attempts at this race which led to 1st place in the Clydesdale division, kind of a goal I've been shooting for at this race every time I do it. Definitely psyched to put up such strong numbers by my standards on less then ideal training and now I'm ready to put some quality time in this winter and really get after it next year.

For most people, there is a story in how they came to the sport as beginners. Some of the most inspiring of those beginner tales begin with health scares.

My question is how do I train for the second Ironman race and continue to improve without "peaking" way too early, becoming stagnant or any of the other training bad words?
