Subject: Where to find good cycling routes?
Hello all,

First post!

I live in North Sydney where there are quite a few hills and traffic lights... this is great for some training but doesn't really translate into most racing routes... I don't really want to be stuck inside on a trainer. Does anyone have any tips or sites to visit to try and find better routes?

Cheers,

Chris

You can start here.  http://labs.strava.com/heatmap

That will show you the roads people ride on (that post to Strava at least).  In a big city it will show pretty much everything but the more common ones will be brighter and it may give you ideas to consider.

Our local cycle club has a number of ride maps on their website, have you checked yours?

join and use strava. the heatmap i'm not familiar with bc im not a premium member, but you can go to the segment explore page and look at segments in your (or any) area. you can click on each one and see how many people have ridden it so you can see what routes are popular/good for riding.

you can also look at the dates of folks riding those segments, so if there's lots of rides but none since 2013...something may have changed and it may not be good to ride. just an example but you can learn a lot if you look around.

if available, google street view is incredibly useful. you can literally look at the roads youre scouting out. you can see what the pavement looks like, if there's a shoulder, scout intersections, etc.

Other options are MapMyRide and Ride with GPS websites/apps - search on routes near you.

https://www.strava.com/routes/new

Click on the cog on the left side of the screen and turn on heatmap. I create routes all the time using this feature. Once made you can then upload it to your bike computer. You don't have to be a premium member to use this feature.
