Wineglass Marathon
56F / 13C
Overcast
Total Time = 38m 44s
Overall Rank = 539/730
Age Group = F 40-44
Age Group Rank = 47/59
Pre-race routine:

Ate a Pop Tart for breakfast and had some iced tea. With an 8:30 am start and a ~5 minute drive we thankfully didn't have to get up stupid early.
Event warmup:

Used the facilities in the high school, then walked to the start line where I did some stretching and loosening up. Got some pre-race pics with Cuda. They had someone sing the National Anthem then we were off!

Comments:

Truth: I only signed up for the 5K so I could get the cereal bowl that the 5K runners could claim by showing their bib at the Corelle store. That being said, I kept the pace pretty easy and just enjoyed the morning and being out with like-minded people.

I took in the sights of the river, the bridges, the leaves that were in the early stages of changing, showing patches of oranges, reds and yellows on the hillsides. It was fun watching the myriad racers: the speedsters (and some fast kids, too!), the average Joes, the first-timers, the friends, the families, the ones to whom a 5K at any pace is not an easy nor trivial feat.

There were 3 kids who were running 'with' their parents, as in ahead of them. They'd run, then walk or dawdle around. Then one would look back and say, "Here they come!" and they'd take off sprinting. Rinse, repeat. It was so funny, especially when they stopped to investigate a flattened roadkill squirrel. They were totally fascinated by it, then..."Ooooh, gross, it's a squirrel!" and they took off sprinting again. I couldn't help but laugh. I said to a lady near me, "Who knew flattened squirrels were so interesting?!" And another guy nearby said, "Those kids just ran over that squirrel, I saw them!" Funny! We all laughed.

The best part of the race was running back over the bridge near the finish - an immature bald eagle was soaring fairly low and close to the river. It was so awesome to see and enjoy this beautiful creature for a minute or so as he flew slow, long paths back and forth over the water. Then a small hawk flew by, too. So very cool.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing considering my goal of just finishing.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a water then headed back up through the course to watch for Cuda. Once she finished, we got some bagel pieces and headed back to the hotel for showers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not applicable.

Event comments:

Very organized race, I'd definitely do it again!

Three miles for a bowl sounds like a good trade to me.  Glad you had fun on your leisurely 5k.

Running for a cereal bowl is awesome!  Maybe it's,just me, but when I read you saw an immature bald eagle I thought of an eagle who was acting sophomoric

OMG, you have THE BEST race time!!  Laughing at first doing the race for a cereal bowl?  What it's gold plated or something that you paid over $30 for a 5K to get a bowl?

A dead roadkill squirrel ....the kids....HYSTERICAL.

Baby bald eagle soaring....gorgeous.

So glad you had a good time!

Clarification: it was a VERY affordable 5K, only $20, and we got a very nice LS race tee with only the name/graphic of the race, an actual finisher's medal (that IS metal) and the cool cereal bowl with the race name/date on it.  Not bad swag for $20. And yup, it is a very worthwhile bowl!  I keep forgetting to take a picture of it.

Definitely worth it! Of course, I'm considering doing a HM in Las Cruces for the shirt...

I'm greatly humored at the sight of all the little sneakers on the spider yet also a bit freaked out.  Spiders aren't my favorite creature, as can be evidenced by this week's FB posts.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had weight issues. I remember standing on the scale as a child weighing 60 pounds and feeling fat. My family dealt with stress by eating.
