Overcast
Total Time = 32m 41s
Overall Rank = 39/76
Age Group = M 54-59
Age Group Rank = 2/4
Pre-race routine:

Drove up to Ventura, met up with the other 24 members of my running club doing the race. Was supposed to do this race last year, but broke my right 5th metatarsal 48 hours beforehand.
Event warmup:

Jogged. A few striders.

Comments:

I'd seen much of the course last year when I was planning to race it...knew that it played to my strong climbing (but that it would also be a fast field, since it is part of the USATF So Cal Cross Country Grand Prix Series). I pushed the really hard climb that makes up much of the first mile, counting on the downhill after it to recover before attacking the second and third climbs in the first two miles. Generally worked as a strategy: I was on fumes by the end, but I didn't have to walk any of the climbs and I beat a guy in my AG who I've never beaten before.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...maybe attack the descents more...I was shooting for 32:00-32:15 and just missed that.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched a little...jogged a little.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm a little limited on big descents by my chronic mid-back pain for compression fracture last year.

Event comments:

This is the most idiosyncratic race I've run: Starts at 5:00pm...6-year age groups...pre-reg prices are higher than on-site...no bib numbers. Brutally hilly, especially the first two mile. Definitely worth doing.
