All,

I'm used to using Body Glide when I go for a run, and chamois cream when I go for a ride. My question is would one be better than the other for triathlon?

I'm particularly wondering if chamois cream would wash out too much in the swim (my events this season will only be ~300m swim) so that they're not around to help on the bike/in the run?

Should I do a bit of Body Glide and then a bit of Aussie Butt Cream as well to be on the safe side?

I know it's only 300/10k/2.5k and not a lot can happen in those distances but anything to increase my comfort level will hopefully aid in a better result.

Cheers,

Tony

I use regular Vaseline (including for the IM distance). Works really well for me - no chafing at all.

I don't apply anything for a routine run, but use Bag Balm for the nether parts prior to rides. The stuff works well in races, doesn't easily wash away in the swim, and is definitely still there at the end of the race. Apply liberally.

I do apply chammy cream before a race. The few times I do race tri's (I'm a duathlete), I do use body glide in a few key places, neck (to eliminate chafing), calfs and knees to get wet suite off quicker.

Chamois cream just doesn't last through the water.  I use Body Glide or 2Toms SportShield.

For something that short, I might use chamois cream. You will only be in the water for about 10 minutes so it shouldn't wash off. However, if you need lube for a 10k bike and a 2.5k run, I would suggest that the problem is your shorts or saddle. My skin chafes pretty easily (what can I say, I am delicate), but even I don't need anything for that distance. Take care of these comfort issues early, or training and racing won't be any fun.

For longer distances, Skin Sake lasts about 10 hours (total race time--I can't swim for 10 hours) even with a salt water swim, and in shorter races typically doesn't come off until I shower with soap.

Like saddle and goggle selection, it tends to be a personal issue.  For me personally, I don't need any lube for anything except body glide on the back of my neck for wetsuit swims over about 7 or 800 yds and body glide or chamois cream for rides over about 40-50 miles.  Anything shorter, and I don't usually bother using anything.  I've coached athletes who need some sort of lube from literally the first 5 minutes.

Experiment with different options in training to find out what works best for you.  If it didn't work, you'll usually know as soon as the water hits you in the shower after the training session.
