I am stumped by this a bit. Rev 3 Maine has been a highlight race in the Rev 3 series for a handful of years now. However, the numbers were declining and a change needed to be made.

Lets see what changes with the change in title.

Race producer: Was Rev 3 is still Rev 3 (Under Ironman banner)
Early Bird price: Was $199, now $265
Race: Had Olympic/Half, relay options, now has Half, relay, or aqua bike options
Field size: Was 1,000, now expected to be over 2,000
Finish Line Policy: Family allowed to finish with athlete, now it is unknown it that will still be allowed
Transfer Policy: Had year deferment or race transfers allowed, now have limited race transfer policy
Post Race: Had Lobster bake, still expected to have lobster bake.
WC Slots: Had 0, now have 35
AWA(Loyalty) points: Not offered, now offered.

So with everyone always complaining about WTC's race entry fees, crowded courses, etc. Why are people only now so excited to race Maine 70.3 (while it is STILL produced by Rev 3). Do athletes really want to pay more for "less" value? What is value to athletes?

Do the additions of WC slots, AWA points, and the M-Dot really make that much of a difference?

Technically, the half had less than 400 participants if we're going to do an apples to apples comparison.

It will operate under WTC's rules so no family allowed to cross the line with a racer.

Yes, the M-Dot means everything when it comes to registrations.

I have no real interest in slots or names or anything and I've never done this race before, I just know I wanted to do it in 2017 as my 2nd 70.3 (First will be Patriot in June) and as a nice way to wind down the year. The bit extra money isn't a game changer for me but I heard so many good things about the race that I wanted to do it. Not having done it before I don't know what it will be like with 2x as many athletes, families, etc but I hope it doesn't muck it up too much because I really heard it was an awesome experience in years past.

I've never understood it?

Just happened in AC this past year; same RD, same coarse, same great event. Add the Ironman name on it and it went from 700 to 2500 participants.
So 3 numbers went up:
number of participants
$$$Price
# of 70.3 championship slots

Well... the 35 WC slots and AWA points seem the the big kicker here.

With only 35 slots you may only have 100-200 people that actually feel that they could get a slot at this race (and thus it is worth doing now when it previously was taking away from a chance to do another race where they could get a slot), but adding 100-200 fast people to a race could attract another 100-200 people that like to be in races with some good competition, and then there may be another 200-400 people that like to be in a bigger race.

The reason I chose a M-Dot race for my big race last year was because I had done small races and they were a great experience but I wanted to see what a big race was like.  If it was put on by Tough Man, Rev 3, HITS, or any other company that would have been fine with me. I just wanted to be with 200+ people in my AG.  I wasn't looking for a WC slot or AWA points and if I had got an WC slot would have turned it down but I followed the crowds and they seem to ripple down from the WC slots.

IM added a bunch of extra WC slots for there new races in China.  They do that increase participation.  Some people choose their races based solely on the stats of how many slots are offered and how well you have to do to get one.

So...I guess my question is if they are adding WC slots to new races does that mean they are reducing the number of WC slots at other M-dot races or are they just allowing a larger WC?

If they are reducing slots at other races then I am sure that participation is dropping at other races.  The race I did last year didn't sell.  We had 1863 participants but that race was consistently hitting 2100 for the three previous years.

Yes, WTC has reduced the number of Kona slots at most/all races.  Most races had 50 slots a couple of years ago.  They now have 40.  The regional championship races have 75.  Even with the lower slot allocations the number of participants at Kona has increased each year.  Seems every two years there's an addition of 100 spots.

For the 70.3 races the number of slots is usually dictated by where the 70.3 WC race is located.  For example, the last couple of years saw only 30 slots at North American races since the WC was in Austria in 2015 and Australia in 2016.  North American qualifying races for the 2017 WC have seen 50 slots due to the WC being in Chattanooga.  Expect that to drop back down to 30 with the 2018 WC being held in South Africa.

Not that this is directly related to the tone of this thread, but it looks like Timberman has been cancelled so that's one less 70.3 in the upper north east this year. If IM was thinking ahead, and I'm guessing they were, once they pulled the plug on Timberman or even knew they were going to do so they figured they'd get their hands on the next closest thing, which would be Maine. Granted there are still a couple other small 70.3 distance in the area (White MTN, Pumpkinman) but Timber going down could be another reason they grabbed it. I know for me personally with Patriot already sold out I'm looking to see what works for the season now.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
