Congrats Ben on the 10k!  It's pretty amazing, now that you've raced that distance, a 5k will feel easy.  So then you'll try and speed up, and you'll be impressed with how much faster you're able to go.  as we all know, it's half mental!

Don't congratulate me on the wheel fix yet - I fixed the radial trueness and broke the lateral trueness...

Ahh. That doesn't sound too good, but never mind, practice makes perfect :D

(now you've got me wondering if I should have a go at truing mine ... What could possibly go wrong..?)

Nice job Ben. Took me a few 10Ks to get my first sub hour. Was so happy when I did.

Gretchen - enjoy the trip. Can't wait to see pics and hear about it.

Dave - if you're checking in I hope you're doing well. Seven days till Boston, would love to hear where you're at with the last minute prep. Hopefully the vertigo has passed.

Fantastic 2500yd swim this morning with masters. A really challenging workout with lots of descending sets. Leaving for Egypt in about an hour. I'll be out of contact for a few days while I get everything settled there. Good luck to all the racers this weekend. Special shout out to DQ, who is gonna rock Boston in less than a week!!

Well done fixing the wheel John. I do most of my own repairs but I am yet to true a wheel!

I did my 10k race on Saturday & it went well. I ran 0:58 & was hoping for better, but still pleased I got under an hour on my first. I'd only ever run 6-7 before & really worked out on k 7-8 psychologically, then sorted it out and sped up again before the end. Anyway, super happy but my thighs are still sore! I was only running 6k once a week before with a group, but now I know I can do it, it's time to level up to the regular 10k group

Last note: After doing this I'm really pleased that I have booked a sprint Triathlon before doing my Olympic otherwise I think I would be in for a massive shock. This way I will get to see the psychological hurdles of each step before going for the 'big' one

Thanks all for your tips too by the way

Congrats! That's a great first race!

First 5:30 AM workout in like, I dunno, six months?  50 minutes on the trainer while my wife did some crazy Cindy Crawford workout DVD from the early 90s.  It's like borderline porn LOL.  Anyway, REALLY struggling on the trainer vs. feeling pretty good on the spin bike.  I think I've lost 40 watts off my FTP since November.  I used to be able to use the big ring all the time minus WU/CD, but now I have to stay in the small ring to stay aerobic.

Oh, and I was cleared to swim.  Again.    Hopefully it goes better this time.  LOL

I'll do cassette changes and simple adjustments, but leave everything to the local wrenches.

Good luck with round 2 at the swim!

I have a more hate than love relationship with the trainer.  I seem to struggle much harder than on the road and never achieve much of a heart rate even still...  Although it seems better when doing intervals.

Finally made it to Cairo last night at 10pm. For those keeping track at home, that is 28 hours of travel (plus 8 hour time difference). Up early this morning to run expedition related errands. Those were fun. Nearly everything I once knew about geography of Cairo has evacuated my brain. Couple that with not knowing much Arabic and there was much miming, signing, and pointing going on! Currently waiting for the van that will take us another five to seven hours down to the site.

No workouts per se, but it isn't even noon yet and I've already walked five miles and lugged around 250 lbs of luggage!

Oh. My. Gosh. That is a lot of travel. Also, 250 lbs of luggage?! Please tell me that is an exaggeration!

I've been MIA for a bit....work's been a bit crazy and I'm actually getting ready to head out on a riding/running vacation.  Starting with three days of riding Texas Hill Country tomorrow, and then heading out to Big Bend National Park for some more riding, running, hot spring lounging, picture taking fun

I finally finished up my race report from Galveston 70.3:  http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=546739&posts=1#M5218319

Hope the training, racing, traveling, and recovering is going well for everyone....and hope everyone is enjoying the occasional adult beverage!  There is a brewery out near Big Bend that I'll be hitting up next week

Ha! Sadly, it is not an exaggeration. There are two of us, each with two checked bags (50# each) plus a carryon and a "personal item". I know my carryon weighed 35lbs (all the paperwork and computers for the project). 250 might be an under estimation.

Made it to my site yesterday evening. It was one of the more eventful trips down from Cairo. The driver hit another car at a checkpoint, which actually turned out to not be that big of deal. Fender benders are very common here due to overly aggressive driving habits. He also hit a speed bump at 100kph. I'm not sure my back will ever be the same. That one hurt. He slowed down a little after that, but not much!!

Hope everyone is doing well! Still no workout for me, but thinking about some yoga later to work out the kinks in my back and neck from travel.

It's across the parking lot - from what I've heard it's a disaster during the summer.  The Fort Avenue pool has been open for like two weeks now.  Brrrrrr!!!!!

Oh yeah I saw that! I might check it out soon now that the weather is getting nicer. Apparently they were trying to get a masters practice there on Sundays but apparently Andrew (the aquatics manager) said "too many people will join," which sounds like what would normally be a good problem to have as a gym. Merritt can be a bit backwards sometimes...

Hey All just checking in.  Getting closer and closer to my first Tri of 2017 and the start of Race Season.  June 10th everything gets rolling...

I'm ready - I could race a sprint right now - but none of my 3 disciplines are anywhere near where I want them.  My swim is as slow as ever, though I can swim longer easier.  Just need a lot more pool time to work on speed but of course life constantly interferes.  I need 3 swims a week and I'm lucky to get one.

Also feeling like I need 3 bikes and 3 runs a week.  I just don't have time with family and life stuff.  Keep waiting for it to let up and it keeps not happening.  I think I'm going to have to start adopting early morning workouts, which I've never had to resort to in the past...  I feel like I had more time for training last year even while overlapping with my wife's crazy 70.3 training.  And this year she's not working out at all.

I think I may be just letting life get in the way and putting my workouts as lowest priority.  I gotta stop that - any tips?

You may already do this, but I have a calendar that I actually specifically schedule my workouts into. I still end up missing them sometimes, but I'm pretty type A when it comes to my calendar so if it's not on there, I probably won't do it. Having it on there helps me prioritize. I am a HUGE fan of early morning workouts though. If I leave working out until the evening it rarely happens unless I am meeting someone who will hold me accountable.

Speaking of accountability, that's another way to make it a priority. If I know someone is expecting me, I will get myself moving even if I don't feel like it. I always feel great after and am happy I did it.

Checking in for the week. I have been catching up on other's posts but not posting about myself too much. This week I stretched myself a bit too thin and missed a couple workouts b/c of it. This always happens to me in the spring b/c I break free of my winter cocoon and turn into a social butterfly. I had vball Monday and did a boot camp Wednesday. I also walked to and from work a couple days. Was going to swim this morning but was out too late last night and hadn't packed to leave for PA, so I just packed first thing this morning and made it to my parents' by 9:30am.

I brought my swim stuff and some running stuff so plan on getting some kind of workout in the next two mornings. Possibly will run this afternoon as well if I have time, but it depends on how much work I get done before I take my mom for a birthday pedicure later

Hope everyone has a great weekend, and a wonderful Easter for those who celebrate it!

+1 on getting up and getting the workouts in, and putting them in a calendar.  It took a while for me to become a morning workout person, but once I got there it made a big difference.  If you can get in like 4-5 hours or decent training first thing, then your afternoon workouts can be short and you can fit them in where you can.  Then you just have to get used to 2-a-days, which is a whole other matter...

Mike - you sure got that right about two a days. I'm quickly learning that right now....

Speaking of which, had my ocean swim this morning followed by my two hour long run this afternoon. This was my longest run in years and while it wasn't "fun" there was a real sense of accomplishment when it was over.

Tomorrow morning is 3h45m ride, which I have to complete by 10am if we're gonna make church in time. Then I will have a 30 minute recovery jog later in the day.

How's everyone's weekend?

Hi Matt! That sounds hardcore, but fun

I've had most of the week 'off' because of a sketchy knee, plus my wife been away at a conference so I couldn't leave my young son at home.

So finally this morning she was back home & I immediately ran out to practice Bricks & I spent the rest of the afternoon buzzing, even though most of the ride was in a storm so by the time I got to the run my shoes were full of water. It still felt great to be back out again

(When I say I had the week 'off', I still managed to go climbing & swimming with my boy, just not any real lengths. Actually, I also finally taught my son to ride his bike, so a pretty good week in many respects!)
